2009-06-21Move FAULT_FLAG_xyz into handle_mm_fault() callersLinus Torvalds
This allows the callers to now pass down the full set of FAULT_FLAG_xyz flags to handle_mm_fault(). All callers have been (mechanically) converted to the new calling convention, there's almost certainly room for architectures to clean up their code and then add FAULT_FLAG_RETRY when that support is added. 2009-04-01generic debug pageallocAkinobu Mita
CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC is now supported by x86, powerpc, sparc64, and s390. This patch implements it for the rest of the architectures by filling the pages with poison byte patterns after free_pages() and verifying the poison patterns before alloc_pages(). This generic one cannot detect invalid page accesses immediately but invalid read access may cause invalid dereference by poisoned memory and invalid write access can be detected after a long delay. 2009-01-06arch/avr32: Eliminate NULL test and memset after alloc_bootmemJulia Lawall
As noted by Akinobu Mita in patch b1fceac2b9e04d278316b2faddf276015fc06e3b, alloc_bootmem and related functions never return NULL and always return a zeroed region of memory. Thus a NULL test or memset after calls to these functions is unnecessary. This was fixed using the following semantic patch. (http://www.emn.fr/x-info/coccinelle/) // <smpl> @@ expression E; statement S; @@ E = \(alloc_bootmem\|alloc_bootmem_low\|alloc_bootmem_pages\|alloc_bootmem_low_pages\|alloc_bootmem_node\|alloc_bootmem_low_pages_node\|alloc_bootmem_pages_node\)(...) ... when != E ( - BUG_ON (E == NULL); | - if (E == NULL) S ) @@ expression E,E1; @@ E = \(alloc_bootmem\|alloc_bootmem_low\|alloc_bootmem_pages\|alloc_bootmem_low_pages\|alloc_bootmem_node\|alloc_bootmem_low_pages_node\|alloc_bootmem_pages_node\)(...) ... when != E - memset(E,0,E1); // </smpl> Signed-off-by: Julia Lawall <julia@diku.dk> Signed-off-by: Haavard Skinnemoen <haavard.skinnemoen@atmel.com>

2008-07-26avr32: use generic show_mem()Johannes Weiner
Remove arch-specific show_mem() in favor of the generic version. This also removes the following redundant information display: - free pages, printed by show_free_areas() - pages in slabs, printed by show_free_areas() - pages in swapcache, printed by show_swap_cache_info() where show_mem() calls show_free_areas(), which calls show_swap_cache_info(). 2008-07-24PAGE_ALIGN(): correctly handle 64-bit values on 32-bit architecturesAndrea Righi
On 32-bit architectures PAGE_ALIGN() truncates 64-bit values to the 32-bit boundary. For example: u64 val = PAGE_ALIGN(size); always returns a value < 4GB even if size is greater than 4GB. The problem resides in PAGE_MASK definition (from include/asm-x86/page.h for example): #define PAGE_SHIFT 12 #define PAGE_SIZE (_AC(1,UL) << PAGE_SHIFT) #define PAGE_MASK (~(PAGE_SIZE-1)) ... #define PAGE_ALIGN(addr) (((addr)+PAGE_SIZE-1)&PAGE_MASK) The "~" is performed on a 32-bit value, so everything in "and" with PAGE_MASK greater than 4GB will be truncated to the 32-bit boundary. Using the ALIGN() macro seems to be the right way, because it uses typeof(addr) for the mask. Also move the PAGE_ALIGN() definitions out of include/asm-*/page.h in include/linux/mm.h. 2008-07-24mm: drop unneeded pgdat argument from free_area_init_node()Johannes Weiner
free_area_init_node() gets passed in the node id as well as the node descriptor. This is redundant as the function can trivially get the node descriptor itself by means of NODE_DATA() and the node's id. I checked all the users and NODE_DATA() seems to be usable everywhere from where this function is called. 2008-07-02avr32: Store virtual addresses in the PGDHaavard Skinnemoen
Instead of storing physical addresses along with page flags in the PGD, store virtual addresses and use NULL to indicate a not present second-level page table. A non-page-aligned page table indicates a bad PMD. This simplifies the TLB miss handler since it no longer has to check the Present bit and no longer has to convert the PGD entry from physical to virtual address. Instead, it has to check for a NULL entry, which is slightly cheaper than either. Signed-off-by: Haavard Skinnemoen <haavard.skinnemoen@atmel.com>

2008-07-02avr32: Clean up and optimize the TLB operationsHaavard Skinnemoen
This and the following patches aim to optimize the code dealing with page tables and TLB operations. Each patch reduces the time it takes to gzip a 16 MB file slightly, but I expect things like fork() and mmap() will improve somewhat more. This patch deals with the low-level TLB operations: * Remove unused _TLBEHI_I define * Use gcc builtins instead of inline assembly * Remove a few unnecessary pipeline flushes and nops * Introduce NR_TLB_ENTRIES define and use it instead of hardcoding it to 32 a few places throughout the code. * Use sysreg bitops instead of hardcoded shifts and masks * Make a few needlessly global functions static Signed-off-by: Haavard Skinnemoen <haavard.skinnemoen@atmel.com>

2008-01-25[AVR32] Drop GFP_COMP for DMA memory allocationsHaavard Skinnemoen
dma_alloc_coherent wants to split pages after allocation in order to reduce the memory footprint. This does not work well with GFP_COMP pages, so drop this flag before allocation. This patch was forward-ported from BSP 2.0 Signed-off-by: Haavard Skinnemoen <hskinnemoen@atmel.com>
2007-12-07[AVR32] Fix copy_to_user_page() breakageHaavard Skinnemoen
The current implementation of copy_to_user_page() gives "vaddr" to the cache instruction when trying to sync the icache with the dcache. If vaddr does not exist in the TLB, the CPU will silently abort the operation, which may result in the caches staying out of sync. To fix this, pass the "dst" parameter to flush_icache_range() instead -- we know this is valid because we just wrote to it. Signed-off-by: Haavard Skinnemoen <hskinnemoen@atmel.com>
2007-10-19pid namespaces: define is_global_init() and is_container_init()Serge E. Hallyn
is_init() is an ambiguous name for the pid==1 check. Split it into is_global_init() and is_container_init(). A cgroup init has it's tsk->pid == 1. A global init also has it's tsk->pid == 1 and it's active pid namespace is the init_pid_ns. But rather than check the active pid namespace, compare the task structure with 'init_pid_ns.child_reaper', which is initialized during boot to the /sbin/init process and never changes. Changelog: 2.6.22-rc4-mm2-pidns1: - Use 'init_pid_ns.child_reaper' to determine if a given task is the global init (/sbin/init) process. This would improve performance and remove dependence on the task_pid(). 2.6.21-mm2-pidns2: - [Sukadev Bhattiprolu] Changed is_container_init() calls in {powerpc, ppc,avr32}/traps.c for the _exception() call to is_global_init(). This way, we kill only the cgroup if the cgroup's init has a bug rather than force a kernel panic. 2007-10-17Remove dma_cache_(wback|inv|wback_inv) functionsRalf Baechle
dma_cache_(wback|inv|wback_inv) were the earliest attempt on a generalized cache managment API for I/O purposes. Originally it was basically the raw MIPS low level cache API exported to the entire world. The API has suffered from a lack of documentation, was not very widely used unlike it's more modern brothers and can easily be replaced by dma_cache_sync. So remove it rsp. turn the surviving bits back into an arch private API, as discussed on linux-arch. 2007-10-16During VM oom condition, kill all threads in process groupWill Schmidt
We have had complaints where a threaded application is left in a bad state after one of it's threads is killed when we hit a VM: out_of_memory condition. Killing just one of the process threads can leave the application in a bad state, whereas killing the entire process group would allow for the application to restart, or be otherwise handled, and makes it very obvious that something has gone wrong. This change allows the entire process group to be taken down, rather than just the one thread. 2007-06-23[AVR32] Fix bug in invalidate_dcache_region()Haavard Skinnemoen
If (start + size) is not cacheline aligned and (start & mask) > (end & mask), the last but one cacheline won't be invalidated as it should. Fix this by rounding `end' down to the nearest cacheline boundary if it gets adjusted due to misalignment. Also flush the write buffer unconditionally -- if the dcache wrote back a line just before we invalidated it, the dirty data may be sitting in the write buffer waiting to corrupt our buffer later. 2007-05-08move die notifier handling to common codeChristoph Hellwig
This patch moves the die notifier handling to common code. Previous various architectures had exactly the same code for it. Note that the new code is compiled unconditionally, this should be understood as an appel to the other architecture maintainer to implement support for it aswell (aka sprinkling a notify_die or two in the proper place) arm had a notifiy_die that did something totally different, I renamed it to arm_notify_die as part of the patch and made it static to the file it's declared and used at. avr32 used to pass slightly less information through this interface and I brought it into line with the other architectures. 2006-09-26[PATCH] avr32 architectureHaavard Skinnemoen
This adds support for the Atmel AVR32 architecture as well as the AT32AP7000 CPU and the AT32STK1000 development board. AVR32 is a new high-performance 32-bit RISC microprocessor core, designed for cost-sensitive embedded applications, with particular emphasis on low power consumption and high code density. The AVR32 architecture is not binary compatible with earlier 8-bit AVR architectures. The AVR32 architecture, including the instruction set, is described by the AVR32 Architecture Manual, available from http://www.atmel.com/dyn/resources/prod_documents/doc32000.pdf The Atmel AT32AP7000 is the first CPU implementing the AVR32 architecture. It features a 7-stage pipeline, 16KB instruction and data caches and a full Memory Management Unit. It also comes with a large set of integrated peripherals, many of which are shared with the AT91 ARM-based controllers from Atmel. Full data sheet is available from http://www.atmel.com/dyn/resources/prod_documents/doc32003.pdf while the CPU core implementation including caches and MMU is documented by the AVR32 AP Technical Reference, available from http://www.atmel.com/dyn/resources/prod_documents/doc32001.pdf Information about the AT32STK1000 development board can be found at http://www.atmel.com/dyn/products/tools_card.asp?tool_id=3918 including a BSP CD image with an earlier version of this patch, development tools (binaries and source/patches) and a root filesystem image suitable for booting from SD card. Alternatively, there's a preliminary "getting started" guide available at http://avr32linux.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/GettingStarted which provides links to the sources and patches you will need in order to set up a cross-compiling environment for avr32-linux. This patch, as well as the other patches included with the BSP and the toolchain patches, is actively supported by Atmel Corporation.
