2006-02-26Make Kprobes depend on modulesLinus Torvalds
Commit 9ec4b1f356b3bad928ae8e2aa9caebfa737d52df made kprobes not compile without module support, so just make that clear in the Kconfig file. Also, since it's marked EXPERIMENTAL, make that dependency explicit too. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2006-02-26[PATCH] fix voyager after topology.c moveJames Bottomley
Commit 9c869edac591977314323a4eaad5f7633fca684f broke voyager again rather subtly because it already had its own topology exporting functions, so now each CPU gets registered twice. I think we can actually use the generic ones, so I don't propose reverting it. The attached should eliminate the voyager topology functions in favour of the generic ones. I also added a define to ensure voyager is never hotplug CPU (we don't have the support in the SMP harness). 2006-02-01[PATCH] VMSPLIT config optionsMark Lord
Enable selection of different user/kernel VM splits for i386, including an optimized mode for 1GB physical RAM, which gives the kernel a direct (non HIGHMEM) mapping to the entire 1GB rather than just the first 896MB. There is a similarly a similarly optimized mode for machines with exactly 2GB of physical RAM. This can speed up the kernel by avoiding having to create/destroy temporary HIGHMEM mappings, and by not having to include HIGHMEM support at all on such machines. The flip side is that there's less virtual addressing left for userspace in these alternatives, and some binary-only kernel modules may misbehave unless rebuilt with the same VMSPLIT option as the main kernel image. 2006-01-14[PATCH] i386: put HOTPLUG_CPU under Processor type, not Bus optionsRandy Dunlap
Move the HOTPLUG_CPU option under "Processor type" instead of under "Bus options". This makes it the same for i386 as most other processor types (arm, ia64, parisc, ppc, s390, & x86_64; but not for powerpc). Besides, it takes me too long to find it under Bus options. I can't be the only person who has trouble finding it. 2006-01-11[PATCH] x86_64: Generalize DMI and enable for x86-64Andi Kleen
Some people need it now on 64bit so reuse the i386 code for x86-64. This will be also useful for future bug workarounds. It is a bit simplified there because there is no need to do it very early on x86-64. This means it doesn't need early ioremap et.al. We run it as a core initcall right now. I hope it's not needed for early setup. I added a general CONFIG_DMI symbol in case IA64 or someone else wants to reuse the code later too. 2006-01-10[PATCH] kexec: change CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START dependencyManeesh Soni
I have heard some complaints about people not finding CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP option and also some objections about its dependency on CONFIG_EMBEDDED. The following patch ends that dependency. I thought of hiding it under CONFIG_KEXEC, but CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START could also be used for some reasons other than kexec/kdump and hence left it visible. I will also update the documentation accordingly. o Following patch removes the config dependency of CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START on CONFIG_EMBEDDED. The reason being CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP option for kdump needs CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START which makes CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP depend on CONFIG_EMBEDDED. It is not always obvious for kdump users to choose CONFIG_EMBEDDED. o It also shifts the palce where this option appears, to make it closer to kexec and kdump options. 2006-01-06[PATCH] i386 sparsemem for single node systemsAndy Whitcroft
Allow SPARSEMEM to be enabled on non-numa x86 systems. This is made dependant on EXPERIMENTAL also being set. When an in-tree user (such as simulated numa) exists it should be made dependant on that. 2005-10-30[PATCH] uml: reuse i386 cpu-specific tuningPaolo 'Blaisorblade' Giarrusso
Make UML share the underlying cpu-specific tuning done on i386. Actually, for now many config options aren't used a lot - but that can be done later. Also, UML relies on GCC optimization for things like memcpy and such more than i386, so specifying the correct -march and -mtune should be enough. Later, we may want to correct some other stuff. For instance, since FPU context switching, for us, is done (at least partially, i.e. between our kernelspace and userspace) by the host, we may allow usage of FPU operations by GCC. This doesn't hold for kernelspace vs. kernelspace, but we don't support preemption. 2005-09-07[PATCH] Kconfig fix (BLK_DEV_FD dependencies)viro@ZenIV.linux.org.uk
Sanitized and fixed floppy dependencies: split the messy dependencies for BLK_DEV_FD by introducing a new symbol (ARCH_MAY_HAVE_PC_FDC), making BLK_DEV_FD depend on that one and taking declarations of ARCH_MAY_HAVE_PC_FDC to arch/*/Kconfig. While we are at it, fixed several obvious cases when BLK_DEV_FD should have been excluded (architectures lacking asm/floppy.h are *not* going to have floppy.c compile, let alone work). If you can come up with better name for that ("this architecture might have working PC-compatible floppy disk controller"), you are more than welcome - just s/ARCH_MAY_HAVE_PC_FDC/your_prefered_name/g in the patch below... 2005-09-07[PATCH] x86/x86_64: deferred handling of writes to /proc/irqxx/smp_affinityAshok Raj
When handling writes to /proc/irq, current code is re-programming rte entries directly. This is not recommended and could potentially cause chipset's to lockup, or cause missing interrupts. CONFIG_IRQ_BALANCE does this correctly, where it re-programs only when the interrupt is pending. The same needs to be done for /proc/irq handling as well. Otherwise user space irq balancers are really not doing the right thing. - Changed pending_irq_balance_cpumask to pending_irq_migrate_cpumask for lack of a generic name. - added move_irq out of IRQ_BALANCE, and added this same to X86_64 - Added new proc handler for write, so we can do deferred write at irq handling time. - Display of /proc/irq/XX/smp_affinity used to display CPU_MASKALL, instead it now shows only active cpu masks, or exactly what was set. - Provided a common move_irq implementation, instead of duplicating when using generic irq framework. Tested on i386/x86_64 and ia64 with CONFIG_PCI_MSI turned on and off. Tested UP builds as well. MSI testing: tbd: I have cards, need to look for a x-over cable, although I did test an earlier version of this patch. Will test in a couple days. 2005-09-05[PATCH] sparsemem extreme implementationBob Picco
With cleanups from Dave Hansen <haveblue@us.ibm.com> SPARSEMEM_EXTREME makes mem_section a one dimensional array of pointers to mem_sections. This two level layout scheme is able to achieve smaller memory requirements for SPARSEMEM with the tradeoff of an additional shift and load when fetching the memory section. The current SPARSEMEM implementation is a one dimensional array of mem_sections which is the default SPARSEMEM configuration. The patch attempts isolates the implementation details of the physical layout of the sparsemem section array. SPARSEMEM_EXTREME requires bootmem to be functioning at the time of memory_present() calls. This is not always feasible, so architectures which do not need it may allocate everything statically by using SPARSEMEM_STATIC. 2005-08-04[PATCH] remove special HPET_EMULATE_RTC config optionVenkatesh Pallipadi
We had a user whose apps weren't working correctly because his "rtc" wasn't working fully. For the sake of simplicity, it seems sensible to always enable HPET RTC emulation. Remove a special config option for HPET_EMULATE_RTC and make it directly depend on HPET_TIMER and RTC. 2005-06-25[PATCH] kexec: x86: add CONFIG_PYSICAL_STARTEric W. Biederman
For one kernel to report a crash another kernel has created we need to have 2 kernels loaded simultaneously in memory. To accomplish this the two kernels need to built to run at different physical addresses. This patch adds the CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START option to the x86 kernel so we can do just that. You need to know what you are doing and the ramifications are before changing this value, and most users won't care so I have made it depend on CONFIG_EMBEDDED bzImage kernels will work and run at a different address when compiled with this option but they will still load at 1MB. 2005-06-25[PATCH] i386 CPU hotplugZwane Mwaikambo
(The i386 CPU hotplug patch provides infrastructure for some work which Pavel is doing as well as for ACPI S3 (suspend-to-RAM) work which Li Shaohua <shaohua.li@intel.com> is doing) The following provides i386 architecture support for safely unregistering and registering processors during runtime, updated for the current -mm tree. In order to avoid dumping cpu hotplug code into kernel/irq/* i dropped the cpu_online check in do_IRQ() by modifying fixup_irqs(). The difference being that on cpu offline, fixup_irqs() is called before we clear the cpu from cpu_online_map and a long delay in order to ensure that we never have any queued external interrupts on the APICs. There are additional changes to s390 and ppc64 to account for this change. 1) Add CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU 2) disable local APIC timer on dead cpus. 3) Disable preempt around irq balancing to prevent CPUs going down. 4) Print irq stats for all possible cpus. 5) Debugging check for interrupts on offline cpus. 6) Hacky fixup_irqs() to redirect irqs when cpus go off/online. 7) play_dead() for offline cpus to spin inside. 8) Handle offline cpus set in flush_tlb_others(). 9) Grab lock earlier in smp_call_function() to prevent CPUs going down. 10) Implement __cpu_disable() and __cpu_die(). 11) Enable local interrupts in cpu_enable() after fixup_irqs() 12) Don't fiddle with NMI on dead cpu, but leave intact on other cpus. 13) Program IRQ affinity whilst cpu is still in cpu_online_map on offline. 2005-06-23[PATCH] sparsemem memory modelAndy Whitcroft
Sparsemem abstracts the use of discontiguous mem_maps[]. This kind of mem_map[] is needed by discontiguous memory machines (like in the old CONFIG_DISCONTIGMEM case) as well as memory hotplug systems. Sparsemem replaces DISCONTIGMEM when enabled, and it is hoped that it can eventually become a complete replacement. A significant advantage over DISCONTIGMEM is that it's completely separated from CONFIG_NUMA. When producing this patch, it became apparent in that NUMA and DISCONTIG are often confused. Another advantage is that sparse doesn't require each NUMA node's ranges to be contiguous. It can handle overlapping ranges between nodes with no problems, where DISCONTIGMEM currently throws away that memory. Sparsemem uses an array to provide different pfn_to_page() translations for each SECTION_SIZE area of physical memory. This is what allows the mem_map[] to be chopped up. In order to do quick pfn_to_page() operations, the section number of the page is encoded in page->flags. Part of the sparsemem infrastructure enables sharing of these bits more dynamically (at compile-time) between the page_zone() and sparsemem operations. However, on 32-bit architectures, the number of bits is quite limited, and may require growing the size of the page->flags type in certain conditions. Several things might force this to occur: a decrease in the SECTION_SIZE (if you want to hotplug smaller areas of memory), an increase in the physical address space, or an increase in the number of used page->flags. One thing to note is that, once sparsemem is present, the NUMA node information no longer needs to be stored in the page->flags. It might provide speed increases on certain platforms and will be stored there if there is room. But, if out of room, an alternate (theoretically slower) mechanism is used. This patch introduces CONFIG_FLATMEM. It is used in almost all cases where there used to be an #ifndef DISCONTIG, because SPARSEMEM and DISCONTIGMEM often have to compile out the same areas of code. 2005-06-23[PATCH] sparsemem base: simple NUMA remap space allocatorDave Hansen
Introduce a simple allocator for the NUMA remap space. This space is very scarce, used for structures which are best allocated node local. This mechanism is also used on non-NUMA ia64 systems with a vmem_map to keep the pgdat->node_mem_map initialized in a consistent place for all architectures. Issues: o alloc_remap takes a node_id where we might expect a pgdat which was intended to allow us to allocate the pgdat's using this mechanism; which we do not yet do. Could have alloc_remap_node() and alloc_remap_nid() for this purpose. 2005-05-27[PATCH] Note on ACPI build fixAlexander Nyberg
Even after the previous fix you can still set CONFIG_ACPI_BOOT indirectly even without CONFIG_ACPI by choosing CONFIG_PCI and CONFIG_PCI_MMCONFIG. That doesn't build very well either. This makes PCI_MMCONFIG depend on ACPI, fixing that hole. [ I guess in theory Kconfig could follow the whole chain of dependencies for things that get selected, but that sounds insanely complicated, so we'll just fix up these things by hand. --Linus ] Signed-off-by: Alexander Nyberg <alexn@telia.com> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

2005-05-04[PATCH] ISA DMA Kconfig fixes - part 1Al Viro
A bunch of drivers use ISA DMA helpers or their equivalents for platforms that have ISA with different DMA controller (a lot of ARM boxen). Currently there is no way to put such dependency in Kconfig - CONFIG_ISA is not it (e.g. it is not set on platforms that have no ISA slots, but have on-board devices that pretend to be ISA ones). New symbol added - ISA_DMA_API. Set when we have functional enable_dma()/set_dma_mode()/etc. set of helpers. Next patches in the series will add missing dependencies for drivers that need them. I'm very carefully staying the hell out of the recurring flamefest on what exactly CONFIG_ISA would mean in ideal world - added symbol has a well-defined meaning and for now I really want to treat it as completely independent from the mess around CONFIG_ISA. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
