2006-06-29[PATCH] solve config broken: undefined reference to `online_page'Yasunori Goto
Memory hotplug code of i386 adds memory to only highmem. So, if CONFIG_HIGHMEM is not set, CONFIG_MEMORY_HOTPLUG shouldn't be set. Otherwise, it causes compile error. In addition, many architecture can't use memory hotplug feature yet. So, I introduce CONFIG_ARCH_ENABLE_MEMORY_HOTPLUG. 2006-06-27[PATCH] vdso: randomize the i386 vDSO by moving it into a vmaIngo Molnar
Move the i386 VDSO down into a vma and thus randomize it. Besides the security implications, this feature also helps debuggers, which can COW a vma-backed VDSO just like a normal DSO and can thus do single-stepping and other debugging features. It's good for hypervisors (Xen, VMWare) too, which typically live in the same high-mapped address space as the VDSO, hence whenever the VDSO is used, they get lots of guest pagefaults and have to fix such guest accesses up - which slows things down instead of speeding things up (the primary purpose of the VDSO). There's a new CONFIG_COMPAT_VDSO (default=y) option, which provides support for older glibcs that still rely on a prelinked high-mapped VDSO. Newer distributions (using glibc 2.3.3 or later) can turn this option off. Turning it off is also recommended for security reasons: attackers cannot use the predictable high-mapped VDSO page as syscall trampoline anymore. There is a new vdso=[0|1] boot option as well, and a runtime /proc/sys/vm/vdso_enabled sysctl switch, that allows the VDSO to be turned on/off. (This version of the VDSO-randomization patch also has working ELF coredumping, the previous patch crashed in the coredumping code.) This code is a combined work of the exec-shield VDSO randomization code and Gerd Hoffmann's hypervisor-centric VDSO patch. Rusty Russell started this patch and i completed it. 2006-06-27[PATCH] fix subarchitecture breakage with CONFIG_SCHED_SMTJames Bottomley
Commit 1e9f28fa1eb9773bf65bae08288c6a0a38eef4a7 ("[PATCH] sched: new sched domain for representing multi-core") incorrectly made SCHED_SMT and some of the structures it uses dependent on SMP. However, this is wrong, the structures are only defined if X86_HT, so SCHED_SMT has to depend on that as well. The patch broke voyager, since it doesn't provide any of the multi-core or hyperthreading structures. 2006-06-26[PATCH] Time: i386 Conversion - part 3: Enable Generic Timekeepingjohn stultz
This converts the i386 arch to use the generic timeofday subsystem. It enabled the GENERIC_TIME option, disables the timer_opts code and other arch specific timekeeping code and reworks the delay code. While this patch enables the generic timekeeping, please note that this patch does not provide any i386 clocksource. Thus only the jiffies clocksource will be available. 2006-04-28[PATCH] Mark VMSPLIT EMBEDDEDAndi Kleen
Running abnormal VM splits causes weird problems - people can set non-standard splits by accident, then lots of time gets wasted diagnosing it - see the long "[stable] 2.6.16.6 breaks java... sort of" email thread. So we need to make this option harder to set. Use CONFIG_EMBEDDED for this. CONFIG_EMBEDDED isn't really the right thing to use, but there's nothing else obvious and avoiding these problems is more important than Kconfig purity. 2006-04-28[PATCH] enable X86_PC for HOTPLUG_CPUAshok Raj
CPU_HOTPLUG has race conditions when we use broadcast mode IPI. - First we introduced no_broadcast option (see include/asm-i386/mach-default/mach_ipi.h) - x86_64 solved it by using physical flat mode (same as bigsmp on i386) since this will not use broadcast shortcuts for IPI. - We switched to use bigsmp on i386 so that we can have same handling as x86_64, but apparently this caused an error message, if kernel was compiled without X86_GENERICARCH, X86_BIGSMP. The message "You have >8 CPUS..." which was bogus and misleading, and only indicated one of the above ARCH wasnt selected. So we do not switch to automatic bigsmp for HOTPLUG_CPU support in i386 until the other related config dependencies for SMP_SUSPEND etc can be done right. 2006-04-11[PATCH] Configurable NODES_SHIFTYasunori Goto
Current implementations define NODES_SHIFT in include/asm-xxx/numnodes.h for each arch. Its definition is sometimes configurable. Indeed, ia64 defines 5 NODES_SHIFT values in the current git tree. But it looks a bit messy. SGI-SN2(ia64) system requires 1024 nodes, and the number of nodes already has been changeable by config. Suitable node's number may be changed in the future even if it is other architecture. So, I wrote configurable node's number. This patch set defines just default value for each arch which needs multi nodes except ia64. But, it is easy to change to configurable if necessary. On ia64 the number of nodes can be already configured in generic ia64 and SN2 config. But, NODES_SHIFT is defined for DIG64 and HP'S machine too. So, I changed it so that all platforms can be configured via CONFIG_NODES_SHIFT. It would be simpler. 2006-03-27[PATCH] sched: new sched domain for representing multi-coreSiddha, Suresh B
Add a new sched domain for representing multi-core with shared caches between cores. Consider a dual package system, each package containing two cores and with last level cache shared between cores with in a package. If there are two runnable processes, with this appended patch those two processes will be scheduled on different packages. On such systems, with this patch we have observed 8% perf improvement with specJBB(2 warehouse) benchmark and 35% improvement with CFP2000 rate(with 2 users). This new domain will come into play only on multi-core systems with shared caches. On other systems, this sched domain will be removed by domain degeneration code. This new domain can be also used for implementing power savings policy (see OLS 2005 CMP kernel scheduler paper for more details.. I will post another patch for power savings policy soon) Most of the arch/* file changes are for cpu_coregroup_map() implementation. 2006-03-25[PATCH] x86: make CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU depend on !X86_PCAshok Raj
Make CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU depend on !X86_PC, so we need to turn on either CONFIG_GENERICARCH, CONFIG_BIGSMP or any other subarch except X86_PC when CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU=y With 2.6.15+ kernels when CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU is turned on we switch to bigsmp mode for sending IPI's and ioapic configurations that caused the following error message. >> More than 8 CPUs detected and CONFIG_X86_PC cannot handle it. >> Use CONFIG_X86_GENERICARCH or CONFIG_X86_BIGSMP. Originally bigsmp was added just to handle >8 cpus, but now with hotplug cpu support we need to use bigsmp mode (why? see below), that cause the above error message even if there were less than 8 cpus in the system. The message is bogus, but we are cannot use logical flat mode due to issues with broadcast IPI can confuse a CPU just comming up. We use flat physical mode just like x86_64 case. More details on why bigsmp now uses flat physical mode (vs. cluster mode) in following link. http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-kernel&m=113261865814107&w=2 Signed-off-by: Ashok Raj <ashok.raj@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

2006-02-26[PATCH] fix voyager after topology.c moveJames Bottomley
Commit 9c869edac591977314323a4eaad5f7633fca684f broke voyager again rather subtly because it already had its own topology exporting functions, so now each CPU gets registered twice. I think we can actually use the generic ones, so I don't propose reverting it. The attached should eliminate the voyager topology functions in favour of the generic ones. I also added a define to ensure voyager is never hotplug CPU (we don't have the support in the SMP harness). 2006-02-01[PATCH] VMSPLIT config optionsMark Lord
Enable selection of different user/kernel VM splits for i386, including an optimized mode for 1GB physical RAM, which gives the kernel a direct (non HIGHMEM) mapping to the entire 1GB rather than just the first 896MB. There is a similarly a similarly optimized mode for machines with exactly 2GB of physical RAM. This can speed up the kernel by avoiding having to create/destroy temporary HIGHMEM mappings, and by not having to include HIGHMEM support at all on such machines. The flip side is that there's less virtual addressing left for userspace in these alternatives, and some binary-only kernel modules may misbehave unless rebuilt with the same VMSPLIT option as the main kernel image. Some people need it now on 64bit so reuse the i386 code for x86-64. This will be also useful for future bug workarounds. It is a bit simplified there because there is no need to do it very early on x86-64. This means it doesn't need early ioremap et.al. We run it as a core initcall right now. I hope it's not needed for early setup. I added a general CONFIG_DMI symbol in case IA64 or someone else wants to reuse the code later too. 2006-01-10[PATCH] kexec: change CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START dependencyManeesh Soni
I have heard some complaints about people not finding CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP option and also some objections about its dependency on CONFIG_EMBEDDED. The following patch ends that dependency. I thought of hiding it under CONFIG_KEXEC, but CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START could also be used for some reasons other than kexec/kdump and hence left it visible. I will also update the documentation accordingly. o Following patch removes the config dependency of CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START on CONFIG_EMBEDDED. The reason being CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP option for kdump needs CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START which makes CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP depend on CONFIG_EMBEDDED. It is not always obvious for kdump users to choose CONFIG_EMBEDDED. o It also shifts the palce where this option appears, to make it closer to kexec and kdump options. 2005-11-07[PATCH] Move Kprobes and Oprofile to "Instrumentation Support" menuPrasanna S Panchamukhi
Andrew Morton suggested to move kprobes from kernel hacking menu, since kernel hacking menu is in-appropriate for the Kprobes. This patch moves Kprobes and Oprofile under instrumentation menu. (akpm: it's not a natural fit, but things like djprobes and the s390 guys' statistics library need a home) Signed-of-by: Prasanna S Panchamukhi <prasanna@in.ibm.com> Cc: Philippe Elie <phil.el@wanadoo.fr> Cc: John Levon <levon@movementarian.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2005-10-31[PATCH] i386: CONFIG_PC removalArthur Othieno
CONFIG_PC is left-over cruft after the introduction of CONFIG_X86_PC with the subarch split. Remove it, and fixup the remaining users to depend on CONFIG_X86_PC instead. Signed-off-by: Arthur Othieno <a.othieno@bluewin.ch> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2005-10-30[PATCH] uml: reuse i386 cpu-specific tuningPaolo 'Blaisorblade' Giarrusso
Make UML share the underlying cpu-specific tuning done on i386. Actually, for now many config options aren't used a lot - but that can be done later. Also, UML relies on GCC optimization for things like memcpy and such more than i386, so specifying the correct -march and -mtune should be enough. Later, we may want to correct some other stuff. For instance, since FPU context switching, for us, is done (at least partially, i.e. between our kernelspace and userspace) by the host, we may allow usage of FPU operations by GCC. This doesn't hold for kernelspace vs. kernelspace, but we don't support preemption. 2005-10-30[PATCH] x86: cmpxchg improvementsJan Beulich
This adjusts i386's cmpxchg patterns so that - for word and long cmpxchg-es the compiler can utilize all possible registers - cmpxchg8b gets disabled when the minimum specified hardware architectur doesn't support it (like was already happening for the byte, word, and long ones). 2005-10-30[PATCH] CONFIG_IA32Brian Gerst
Add CONFIG_X86_32 for i386. This allows selecting options that only apply to 32-bit systems. (X86 && !X86_64) becomes X86_32 (X86 || X86_64) becomes X86 Signed-off-by: Brian Gerst <bgerst@didntduck.org> Cc: Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2005-09-14[LIB]: Consolidate _atomic_dec_and_lock()David S. Miller
Several implementations were essentialy a common piece of C code using the cmpxchg() macro. Put the implementation in one spot that everyone can share, and convert sparc64 over to using this. Alpha is the lone arch-specific implementation, which codes up a special fast path for the common case in order to avoid GP reloading which a pure C version would require. Signed-off-by: David S. 2005-09-07[PATCH] Kconfig fix (BLK_DEV_FD dependencies)viro@ZenIV.linux.org.uk
Sanitized and fixed floppy dependencies: split the messy dependencies for BLK_DEV_FD by introducing a new symbol (ARCH_MAY_HAVE_PC_FDC), making BLK_DEV_FD depend on that one and taking declarations of ARCH_MAY_HAVE_PC_FDC to arch/*/Kconfig. While we are at it, fixed several obvious cases when BLK_DEV_FD should have been excluded (architectures lacking asm/floppy.h are *not* going to have floppy.c compile, let alone work). If you can come up with better name for that ("this architecture might have working PC-compatible floppy disk controller"), you are more than welcome - just s/ARCH_MAY_HAVE_PC_FDC/your_prefered_name/g in the patch below... 2005-09-07[PATCH] x86/x86_64: deferred handling of writes to /proc/irqxx/smp_affinityAshok Raj
When handling writes to /proc/irq, current code is re-programming rte entries directly. This is not recommended and could potentially cause chipset's to lockup, or cause missing interrupts. CONFIG_IRQ_BALANCE does this correctly, where it re-programs only when the interrupt is pending. The same needs to be done for /proc/irq handling as well. Otherwise user space irq balancers are really not doing the right thing. - Changed pending_irq_balance_cpumask to pending_irq_migrate_cpumask for lack of a generic name. - added move_irq out of IRQ_BALANCE, and added this same to X86_64 - Added new proc handler for write, so we can do deferred write at irq handling time. - Display of /proc/irq/XX/smp_affinity used to display CPU_MASKALL, instead it now shows only active cpu masks, or exactly what was set. - Provided a common move_irq implementation, instead of duplicating when using generic irq framework. Tested on i386/x86_64 and ia64 with CONFIG_PCI_MSI turned on and off. Tested UP builds as well. MSI testing: tbd: I have cards, need to look for a x-over cable, although I did test an earlier version of this patch. Will test in a couple days. 2005-09-05[PATCH] unify x86/x86-64 semaphore codeBenjamin LaHaise
This patch moves the common code in x86 and x86-64's semaphore.c into a single file in lib/semaphore-sleepers.c. The arch specific asm stubs are left in the arch tree (in semaphore.c for i386 and in the asm for x86-64). There should be no changes in code/functionality with this patch.
