2007-07-21i386: Move all simple string operations out of lineAndi Kleen
The compiler generally generates reasonable inline code for the simple cases and for the rest it's better for code size for them to be out of line. Also there they can be potentially optimized more in the future. In fact they probably should be in a .S file because they're all pure assembly, but that's for another day. Also some code style cleanup on them while I was on it (this seems to be the last untouched really early Linux code) This saves ~12k text for a defconfig kernel with gcc 4.1. 2007-05-08i386: Add safe variants of rdmsr_on_cpu and wrmsr_on_cpuRudolf Marek
Add safe (exception handled) variants of rdmsr_on_cpu and wrmsr_on_cpu. You should use these when the target MSR may not actually exist, as doing so could trigger an exception which the regular functions do not handle. The safe variants are slower, though. The upcoming coretemp hardware monitoring driver will need this. 2007-04-02[PATCH] i386: fix file_read_actor() and pipe_read() for original i386 systemsThomas Gleixner
The __copy_to_user_inatomic() calls in file_read_actor() and pipe_read() are broken on original i386 machines, where WP-works-ok == false, as __copy_to_user_inatomic() on such systems calls functions which might sleep and/or contain cond_resched() calls inside of a kmap_atomic() region. The original check for WP-works-ok was in access_ok(), but got moved during the 2.5 series to fix a race vs. swap. Return the number of bytes to copy in the case where we are in an atomic region, so the non atomic code pathes in file_read_actor() and pipe_read() are taken. This could be optimized to avoid the kmap_atomicby moving the check for WP-works-ok into fault_in_pages_writeable(), but this is more intrusive and can be done later. 2007-02-20rdmsr_on_cpu, wrmsr_on_cpuAlexey Dobriyan
There was OpenVZ specific bug rendering some cpufreq drivers unusable on SMP. In short, when cpufreq code thinks it confined itself to needed cpu by means of set_cpus_allowed() to execute rdmsr, some "virtual cpu" feature can migrate process to anywhere. This triggers bugons and does wrong things in general. This got fixed by introducing rdmsr_on_cpu and wrmsr_on_cpu executing rdmsr and wrmsr on given physical cpu by means of smp_call_function_single(). Dave Jones mentioned cpufreq might be not only user of rdmsr_on_cpu() and wrmsr_on_cpu(), so I'm putting them into arch/{i386,x86_64}/lib/ . 2006-10-20[PATCH] separate bdi congestion functions from queue congestion functionsAndrew Morton
Separate out the concept of "queue congestion" from "backing-dev congestion". Congestion is a backing-dev concept, not a queue concept. The blk_* congestion functions are retained, as wrappers around the core backing-dev congestion functions. This proper layering is needed so that NFS can cleanly use the congestion functions, and so that CONFIG_BLOCK=n actually links. 2006-09-29[PATCH] pidspace: is_init()Sukadev Bhattiprolu
This is an updated version of Eric Biederman's is_init() patch. (http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/2/6/280). It applies cleanly to 2.6.18-rc3 and replaces a few more instances of ->pid == 1 with is_init(). Further, is_init() checks pid and thus removes dependency on Eric's other patches for now. Eric's original description: There are a lot of places in the kernel where we test for init because we give it special properties. Most significantly init must not die. This results in code all over the kernel test ->pid == 1. Introduce is_init to capture this case. With multiple pid spaces for all of the cases affected we are looking for only the first process on the system, not some other process that has pid == 1. Signed-off-by: Eric W. 2006-07-14[PATCH] i386: remove redundant might_sleep() in user accessors.Vadim Lobanov
On i386, the user space accessor functions copy_from/to_user() both invoke might_sleep(), do a quick sanity check, and then pass the work on to their __copy_from/to_user() counterparts, which again invoke might_sleep(). Given that no actual work happens between these two calls, it is best to eliminate one of the redundant might_sleep()s. 2006-06-26[PATCH] Time: i386 Conversion - part 3: Enable Generic Timekeepingjohn stultz
This converts the i386 arch to use the generic timeofday subsystem. It enabled the GENERIC_TIME option, disables the timer_opts code and other arch specific timekeeping code and reworks the delay code. While this patch enables the generic timekeeping, please note that this patch does not provide any i386 clocksource. Thus only the jiffies clocksource will be available. To get full replacements for the code being disabled here, the timeofday-clocks-i386 patch will needed. 2006-06-25[PATCH] Make copy_from_user_inatomic NOT zero the tail on i386NeilBrown
As described in a previous patch and documented in mm/filemap.h, copy_from_user_inatomic* shouldn't zero out the tail of the buffer after an incomplete copy. This patch implements that change for i386. For the _nocache version, a new __copy_user_intel_nocache is defined similar to copy_user_zeroio_intel_nocache, and this is ultimately used for the copy. For the regular version, __copy_from_user_ll_nozero is defined which uses __copy_user and __copy_user_intel - the later needs casts to reposition the __user annotations. If copy_from_user_atomic is given a constant length of 1, 2, or 4, then we do still zero the destintion on failure. This didn't seem worth the effort of fixing as the places where it is used really don't care. 2005-09-14[LIB]: Consolidate _atomic_dec_and_lock()David S. Miller
Several implementations were essentialy a common piece of C code using the cmpxchg() macro. Put the implementation in one spot that everyone can share, and convert sparc64 over to using this. 2005-06-21[PATCH] smp_processor_id() cleanupIngo Molnar
This patch implements a number of smp_processor_id() cleanup ideas that Arjan van de Ven and I came up with. The previous __smp_processor_id/_smp_processor_id/smp_processor_id API spaghetti was hard to follow both on the implementational and on the usage side. Some of the complexity arose from picking wrong names, some of the complexity comes from the fact that not all architectures defined __smp_processor_id. In the new code, there are two externally visible symbols: - smp_processor_id(): debug variant. - raw_smp_processor_id(): nondebug variant. Replaces all existing uses of _smp_processor_id() and __smp_processor_id(). Defined by every SMP architecture in include/asm-*/smp.h. There is one new internal symbol, dependent on DEBUG_PREEMPT: - debug_smp_processor_id(): internal debug variant, mapped to smp_processor_id(). Also, i moved debug_smp_processor_id() from lib/kernel_lock.c into a new lib/smp_processor_id.c file. All related comments got updated and/or clarified. I have build/boot tested the following 8 .config combinations on x86: {SMP,UP} x {PREEMPT,!PREEMPT} x {DEBUG_PREEMPT,!DEBUG_PREEMPT} I have also build/boot tested x64 on UP/PREEMPT/DEBUG_PREEMPT. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
