2008-07-24flag parameters: pipeUlrich Drepper
This patch introduces the new syscall pipe2 which is like pipe but it also takes an additional parameter which takes a flag value. This patch implements the handling of O_CLOEXEC for the flag. I did not add support for the new syscall for the architectures which have a special sys_pipe implementation. I think the maintainers of those archs have the chance to go with the unified implementation but that's up to them. The implementation introduces do_pipe_flags. I did that instead of changing all callers of do_pipe because some of the callers are written in assembler. I would probably screw up changing the assembly code. To avoid breaking code do_pipe is now a small wrapper around do_pipe_flags. Once all callers are changed over to do_pipe_flags the old do_pipe function can be removed. The following test must be adjusted for architectures other than x86 and x86-64 and in case the syscall numbers changed. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ #include <fcntl.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <unistd.h> #include <sys/syscall.h> #ifndef __NR_pipe2 # ifdef __x86_64__ # define __NR_pipe2 293 # elif defined __i386__ # define __NR_pipe2 331 # else # error "need __NR_pipe2" # endif #endif int main (void) { int fd[2]; if (syscall (__NR_pipe2, fd, 0) != 0) { puts ("pipe2(0) failed"); return 1; } for (int i = 0; i < 2; ++i) { int coe = fcntl (fd[i], F_GETFD); if (coe == -1) { puts ("fcntl failed"); return 1; } if (coe & FD_CLOEXEC) { printf ("pipe2(0) set close-on-exit for fd[%d]\n", i); return 1; } } close (fd[0]); close (fd[1]); if (syscall (__NR_pipe2, fd, O_CLOEXEC) != 0) { puts ("pipe2(O_CLOEXEC) failed"); return 1; } for (int i = 0; i < 2; ++i) { int coe = fcntl (fd[i], F_GETFD); if (coe == -1) { puts ("fcntl failed"); return 1; } if ((coe & FD_CLOEXEC) == 0) { printf ("pipe2(O_CLOEXEC) does not set close-on-exit for fd[%d]\n", i); return 1; } } close (fd[0]); close (fd[1]); puts ("OK"); return 0; } ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Signed-off-by: Ulrich Drepper <drepper@redhat.com> Acked-by: Davide Libenzi <davidel@xmailserver.org> Cc: Michael Kerrisk <mtk.manpages@googlemail.com> Cc: <linux-arch@vger.kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2008-05-15[IA64] fix personality(PER_LINUX32) performance issueHuang, Xiaolan
The patch aims to fix a performance issue for the syscall personality(PER_LINUX32). On IA-64 box, the syscall personality (PER_LINUX32) has poor performance because it failed to find the Linux/x86 execution domain. Then it tried to load the kernel module however it failed always and it used the default execution domain PER_LINUX instead. Requesting kernel modules is very expensive. It caused the performance issue. (see the function lookup_exec_domain in kernel/exec_domain.c). To resolve the issue, execution domain Linux/x86 is always registered in initialization time for IA-64 architecture. Replace TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK with TS_RESTORE_SIGMASK and define our own set_restore_sigmask() function. This saves the costly SMP-safe set_bit operation, which we do not need for the sigmask flag since TIF_SIGPENDING always has to be set too. Compilation of 2.6.25-rc2-mm1 on ia64 generates many warnings. IA64 support 2 ELF format (IA64 binary and IA32 binary), thus if 2 elf related header included, cause many warning or error. about 2 week ago, J. Bruce Fields proposed this problem fixed patch. 2008-03-04[IA64] signal(ia64_ia32): add a signal stack overflow checkShi Weihua
The similar check has been added to x86_32(i386) in commit id 83bd01024b1fdfc41d9b758e5669e80fca72df66. 2008-02-20[IA64] VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING (accurate cpu time accounting)Hidetoshi Seto
This patch implements VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING for ia64, which enable us to use more accurate cpu time accounting. The VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING is an item of kernel config, which s390 and powerpc arch have. By turning this config on, these archs change the mechanism of cpu time accounting from tick-sampling based one to state-transition based one. The state-transition based accounting is done by checking time (cycle counter in processor) at every state-transition point, such as entrance/exit of kernel, interrupt, softirq etc. The difference between point to point is the actual time consumed during in the state. There is no doubt about that this value is more accurate than that of tick-sampling based accounting. 2007-10-17x86: replace NT_PRXFPREG with ELF_CORE_XFPREG_TYPE #defineMark Nelson
Replace NT_PRXFPREG with ELF_CORE_XFPREG_TYPE in the coredump code which allows for more flexibility in the note type for the state of 'extended floating point' implementations in coredumps. New note types can now be added with an appropriate #define. This does #define ELF_CORE_XFPREG_TYPE to be NT_PRXFPREG in all current users so there's are no change in behaviour. This will let us use different note types on powerpc for the Altivec/VMX state that some PowerPC cpus have (G4, PPC970, POWER6) and for the SPE (signal processing extension) state that some embedded PowerPC cpus from Freescale have. 2007-07-20mm: Remove slab destructors from kmem_cache_create().Paul Mundt
Slab destructors were no longer supported after Christoph's c59def9f222d44bb7e2f0a559f2906191a0862d7 change. They've been BUGs for both slab and slub, and slob never supported them either. 2007-07-19mm: variable length argument supportOllie Wild
Remove the arg+env limit of MAX_ARG_PAGES by copying the strings directly from the old mm into the new mm. We create the new mm before the binfmt code runs, and place the new stack at the very top of the address space. Once the binfmt code runs and figures out where the stack should be, we move it downwards. It is a bit peculiar in that we have one task with two mm's, one of which is inactive. 2007-07-16diskquota: 32bit quota tools on 64bit architecturesVasily Tarasov
OpenVZ Linux kernel team has discovered the problem with 32bit quota tools working on 64bit architectures. In 2.6.10 kernel sys32_quotactl() function was replaced by sys_quotactl() with the comment "sys_quotactl seems to be 32/64bit clean, enable it for 32bit" However this isn't right. Look at if_dqblk structure: struct if_dqblk { __u64 dqb_bhardlimit; __u64 dqb_bsoftlimit; __u64 dqb_curspace; __u64 dqb_ihardlimit; __u64 dqb_isoftlimit; __u64 dqb_curinodes; __u64 dqb_btime; __u64 dqb_itime; __u32 dqb_valid; }; For 32 bit quota tools sizeof(if_dqblk) == 0x44. But for 64 bit kernel its size is 0x48, 'cause of alignment! Thus we got a problem. Attached patch reintroduce sys32_quotactl() function, that handles this and related situations. This fixes the setup of the alignment of the signal frame, so that all signal handlers are run with a properly aligned stack frame. The current code "over-aligns" the stack pointer so that the stack frame is effectively always mis-aligned by 4 bytes. 2006-10-03[PATCH] VFS: Make filldir_t and struct kstat deal in 64-bit inode numbersDavid Howells
These patches make the kernel pass 64-bit inode numbers internally when communicating to userspace, even on a 32-bit system. They are required because some filesystems have intrinsic 64-bit inode numbers: NFS3+ and XFS for example. The 64-bit inode numbers are then propagated to userspace automatically where the arch supports it. Problems have been seen with userspace (eg: ld.so) using the 64-bit inode number returned by stat64() or getdents64() to differentiate files, and failing because the 64-bit inode number space was compressed to 32-bits, and so overlaps occur. This patch: Make filldir_t take a 64-bit inode number and struct kstat carry a 64-bit inode number so that 64-bit inode numbers can be passed back to userspace. The stat functions then returns the full 64-bit inode number where available and where possible. If it is not possible to represent the inode number supplied by the filesystem in the field provided by userspace, then error EOVERFLOW will be issued. Similarly, the getdents/readdir functions now pass the full 64-bit inode number to userspace where possible, returning EOVERFLOW instead when a directory entry is encountered that can't be properly represented. Note that this means that some inodes will not be stat'able on a 32-bit system with old libraries where they were before - but it does mean that there will be no ambiguity over what a 32-bit inode number refers to. Note similarly that directory scans may be cut short with an error on a 32-bit system with old libraries where the scan would work before for the same reasons. It is judged unlikely that this situation will occur because modern glibc uses 64-bit capable versions of stat and getdents class functions exclusively, and that older systems are unlikely to encounter unrepresentable inode numbers anyway. 2006-09-27[PATCH] sysctl: Allow /proc/sys without sys_sysctlEric W. Biederman
Since sys_sysctl is deprecated start allow it to be compiled out. This should catch any remaining user space code that cares, and paves the way for further sysctl cleanups. 2006-03-26[PATCH] bitops: ia64: make partial_page.bitmap an unsigned longAkinobu Mita
The find_*_bit() routines are defined to work on a pointer to unsigned long. But partial_page.bitmap is unsigned int and it is passed to find_*_bit() in arch/ia64/ia32/sys_ia32.c. So the compiler will print warnings. This patch changes to unsigned long instead. 2006-03-25[PATCH] sys_alarm() unsigned signed conversion fixupThomas Gleixner
alarm() calls the kernel with an unsigend int timeout in seconds. The value is stored in the tv_sec field of a struct timeval to setup the itimer. The tv_sec field of struct timeval is of type long, which causes the tv_sec value to be negative on 32 bit machines if seconds > INT_MAX. Before the hrtimer merge (pre 2.6.16) such a negative value was converted to the maximum jiffies timeout by the timeval_to_jiffies conversion. It's not clear whether this was intended or just happened to be done by the timeval_to_jiffies code. hrtimers expect a timeval in canonical form and treat a negative timeout as already expired. This breaks the legitimate usage of alarm() with a timeout value > INT_MAX seconds. For 32 bit machines it is therefor necessary to limit the internal seconds value to avoid API breakage. Instead of doing this in all implementations of sys_alarm the duplicated sys_alarm code is moved into a common function in itimer.c Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
