2007-11-13[POWERPC] Avoid unpaired stwcx. on some processorsBecky Bruce
The context switch code in the kernel issues a dummy stwcx. to clear the reservation, as recommended by the architecture. However, some processors can have issues if this stwcx to address A occurs while the reservation is already held to a different address B. To avoid this problem, the dummy stwcx. needs to be paired with a dummy lwarx to the same address. This adds the dummy lwarx, and creates a cpu feature bit to indicate which cpus are affected. Tested on mpc8641_hpcn_defconfig in arch/powerpc; build tested in arch/ppc. Signed-off-by: Becky Bruce <becky.bruce@freescale.com> Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>
2007-11-01[POWERPC] 4xx: Deal with 44x virtually tagged icacheBenjamin Herrenschmidt
The 44x family has an interesting "feature" which is a virtually tagged instruction cache (yuck !). So far, we haven't dealt with it properly, which means we've been mostly lucky or people didn't report the problems, unless people have been running custom patches in their distro... This is an attempt at fixing it properly. I chose to do it by setting a global flag whenever we change a PTE that was previously marked executable, and flush the entire instruction cache upon return to user space when that happens. This is a bit heavy handed, but it's hard to do more fine grained flushes as the icbi instruction, on those processor, for some very strange reasons (since the cache is virtually mapped) still requires a valid TLB entry for reading in the target address space, which isn't something I want to deal with. 2006-04-21[PATCH] ppc: Fix powersave code on arch/ppcBecky Bruce
Fix asm_offsets.c and entry.S to work with the new power save code. Changes in arch/powerpc needed to exist in arch/ppc as well since the idle code is shared by both ppc and powerpc.. Signed-off-by: Becky Bruce <becky.bruce@freescale.com> Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>
2006-03-28ppc: Remove CHRP, POWER3 and POWER4 support from arch/ppcPaul Mackerras
32-bit CHRP machines are now supported only in arch/powerpc, as are all 64-bit PowerPC processors. This means that we don't use Open Firmware on any platform in arch/ppc any more. This makes PReP support a single-platform option like every other platform support option in arch/ppc now, thus CONFIG_PPC_MULTIPLATFORM is gone from arch/ppc. CONFIG_PPC_PREP is the option that selects PReP support and is generally what has replaced CONFIG_PPC_MULTIPLATFORM within arch/ppc. _machine is all but dead now, being #defined to 0. Updated Makefiles, comments and Kconfig options generally to reflect these changes. Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>
2006-03-27powerpc: Unify the 32 and 64 bit idle loopsPaul Mackerras
This unifies the 32-bit (ARCH=ppc and ARCH=powerpc) and 64-bit idle loops. It brings over the concept of having a ppc_md.power_save function from 32-bit to ARCH=powerpc, which lets us get rid of native_idle(). With this we will also be able to simplify the idle handling for pSeries and cell. Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>
2006-03-08powerpc: Fix various syscall/signal/swapcontext bugsPaul Mackerras
A careful reading of the recent changes to the system call entry/exit paths revealed several problems, plus some things that could be simplified and improved: * 32-bit wasn't testing the _TIF_NOERROR bit in the syscall fast exit path, so it was only doing anything with it once it saw some other bit being set. In other words, the noerror behaviour would apply to the next system call where we had to reschedule or deliver a signal, which is not necessarily the current system call. * 32-bit wasn't doing the call to ptrace_notify in the syscall exit path when the _TIF_SINGLESTEP bit was set. * _TIF_RESTOREALL was in both _TIF_USER_WORK_MASK and _TIF_PERSYSCALL_MASK, which is odd since _TIF_RESTOREALL is only set by system calls. I took it out of _TIF_USER_WORK_MASK. * On 64-bit, _TIF_RESTOREALL wasn't causing the non-volatile registers to be restored (unless perhaps a signal was delivered or the syscall was traced or single-stepped). Thus the non-volatile registers weren't restored on exit from a signal handler. We probably got away with it mostly because signal handlers written in C wouldn't alter the non-volatile registers. * On 32-bit I simplified the code and made it more like 64-bit by making the syscall exit path jump to ret_from_except to handle preemption and signal delivery. * 32-bit was calling do_signal unnecessarily when _TIF_RESTOREALL was set - but I think because of that 32-bit was actually restoring the non-volatile registers on exit from a signal handler. * I changed the order of enabling interrupts and saving the non-volatile registers before calling do_syscall_trace_leave; now we enable interrupts first. 2006-01-09[PATCH] ppc: Make ARCH=ppc build again with new syscall pathDavid Woodhouse
This makes ARCH=ppc build in your powerpc tree again, with the new syscall entry/exit path. Still doesn't actually boot on my Pegasos; the last thing I see is 'MMU:exit'. But at least it builds -- I'll look at why it doesn't boot later, so that I can see if the mv643xx_eth actually works with ARCH=ppc (it doesn't with ARCH=powerpc; two in every three packets I receive are offset by 4 bytes). 2005-10-21[PATCH] powerpc: Merge thread_info.hDavid Gibson
Merge ppc32 and ppc64 versions of thread_info.h. They were pretty similar already, the chief changes are: - Instead of inline asm to implement current_thread_info(), which needs to be different for ppc32 and ppc64, we use C with an asm("r1") register variable. gcc turns it into the same asm as we used to have for both platforms. - We replace ppc32's 'local_flags' with the ppc64 'syscall_noerror' field. The noerror flag was in fact the only thing in the local_flags field anyway, so the ppc64 approach is simpler, and means we only need a load-immediate/store instead of load/mask/store when clearing the flag. - In readiness for 64k pages, when THREAD_SIZE will be less than a page, ppc64 used kmalloc() rather than get_free_pages() to allocate the kernel stack. With this patch we do the same for ppc32, since there's no strong reason not to. - For ppc64, we no longer export THREAD_SHIFT and THREAD_SIZE via asm-offsets, thread_info.h can now be safely included in asm, as on ppc32. Built and booted on G4 Powerbook (ARCH=ppc and ARCH=powerpc) and Power5 (ARCH=ppc64 and ARCH=powerpc). 2005-06-25[PATCH] ppc32: Add support for Freescale e200 (Book-E) coreKumar Gala
The e200 core is a Book-E core (similar to e500) that has a unified L1 cache and is not cache coherent on the bus. The e200 core also adds a separate exception level for debug exceptions. Part of this patch helps to cleanup a few cases that are true for all Freescale Book-E parts, not just e500. 2005-06-21[PATCH] ppc32: Factor out common exception code into macro's for 4xx/Book-EKumar Gala
4xx and Book-E PPC's have several exception levels. The code to handle each level is fairly regular. Turning the code into macro's will ease the handling of future exception levels (debug) in forth coming chips. 2005-05-01[PATCH] ppc32: refactor FPU exception handlingPaul Mackerras
Moved common FPU exception handling code out of head.S so it can be used by several of the sub-architectures that might of a full PowerPC FPU. Also, uses new CONFIG_PPC_FPU define to fix alignment exception handling for floating point load/store instructions to only occur if we have a hardware FPU. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
