2008-07-17sparc64: Remove 4MB and 512K base page size options.David S. Miller
Adrian Bunk reported that enabling 4MB page size breaks the build. The problem is that MAX_ORDER combined with the page shift exceeds the SECTION_SIZE_BITS we use in asm-sparc64/sparsemem.h There are several ways I suppose we could work around this. For one we could define a CONFIG_FORCE_MAX_ZONEORDER to decrease MAX_ORDER in these higher page size cases. But I also know that these page size cases are broken wrt. TLB miss handling especially on pre-hypervisor systems, and there isn't an easy way to fix that. These options were meant to be fun experimental hacks anyways, and only 8K and 64K make any sense to support. So remove 512K and 4M base page size support. Of course, we still support these page sizes for huge pages. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

2008-05-23ftrace: add have dynamic ftrace config for archsSteven Rostedt
Now that ftrace is being ported to other architectures, it has become apparent that DYNAMIC_FTRACE is dependent on whether or not that architecture implements dynamic ftrace. FTRACE itself may be ported to an architecture without porting dynamic ftrace. This patch adds HAVE_DYNAMIC_FTRACE to allow architectures to port ftrace without having to also port the dynamic aspect as well. 2008-04-29sparc: Add kgdb support.David S. Miller
Current limitations: 1) On SMP single stepping has some fundamental issues, shared with other sw single-step architectures such as mips and arm. 2) On 32-bit sparc we don't support SMP kgdb yet. That requires some reworking of the IPI mechanisms and infrastructure on that platform. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2008-04-26sparc64: Kill CONFIG_SPARC32_COMPATDavid S. Miller
It's completely superfluous, CONFIG_COMPAT is sufficient. What this used to be is an umbrella for enabling code shared by all 32-bit compat binary support types. But with the removal of SunOS and Solaris support, the only one left is Linux 32-bit ELF. Update defconfig. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

2008-03-04Kprobes: indicate kretprobe support in KconfigAnanth N Mavinakayanahalli
Add CONFIG_HAVE_KRETPROBES to the arch/<arch>/Kconfig file for relevant architectures with kprobes support. This facilitates easy handling of in-kernel modules (like samples/kprobes/kretprobe_example.c) that depend on kretprobes being present in the kernel. Thanks to Sam Ravnborg for helping make the patch more lean. Per Mathieu's suggestion, added CONFIG_KRETPROBES and fixed up dependencies. 2008-02-03Add HAVE_KPROBESMathieu Desnoyers
Linus: On the per-architecture side, I do think it would be better to *not* have internal architecture knowledge in a generic file, and as such a line like depends on X86_32 || IA64 || PPC || S390 || SPARC64 || X86_64 || AVR32 really shouldn't exist in a file like kernel/Kconfig.instrumentation. It would be much better to do depends on ARCH_SUPPORTS_KPROBES in that generic file, and then architectures that do support it would just have a bool ARCH_SUPPORTS_KPROBES default y in *their* architecture files. That would seem to be much more logical, and is readable both for arch maintainers *and* for people who have no clue - and don't care - about which architecture is supposed to support which interface... Changelog: Actually, I know I gave this as the magic incantation, but now that I see it, I realize that I should have told you to just use config KPROBES_SUPPORT def_bool y instead, which is a bit denser. We seem to use both kinds of syntax for these things, but this is really what "def_bool" is there for... - Use HAVE_KPROBES - Use a select - Yet another update : Moving to HAVE_* now. - Update ARM for kprobes support. 2008-01-30spinlock: lockbreak cleanupNick Piggin
The break_lock data structure and code for spinlocks is quite nasty. Not only does it double the size of a spinlock but it changes locking to a potentially less optimal trylock. Put all of that under CONFIG_GENERIC_LOCKBREAK, and introduce a __raw_spin_is_contended that uses the lock data itself to determine whether there are waiters on the lock, to be used if CONFIG_GENERIC_LOCKBREAK is not set. Rename need_lockbreak to spin_needbreak, make it use spin_is_contended to decouple it from the spinlock implementation, and make it typesafe (rwlocks do not have any need_lockbreak sites -- why do they even get bloated up with that break_lock then?). 2007-07-16[SPARC64]: Initial LDOM cpu hotplug support.David S. Miller
Only adding cpus is supports at the moment, removal will come next. When new cpus are configured, the machine description is updated. When we get the configure request we pass in a cpu mask of to-be-added cpus to the mdesc CPU node parser so it only fetches information for those cpus. That code also proceeds to update the SMT/multi-core scheduling bitmaps. cpu_up() does all the work and we return the status back over the DS channel. CPUs via dr-cpu need to be booted straight out of the hypervisor, and this requires: 1) A new trampoline mechanism. CPUs are booted straight out of the hypervisor with MMU disabled and running in physical addresses with no mappings installed in the TLB. The new hvtramp.S code sets up the critical cpu state, installs the locked TLB mappings for the kernel, and turns the MMU on. It then proceeds to follow the logic of the existing trampoline.S SMP cpu bringup code. 2) All calls into OBP have to be disallowed when domaining is enabled. Since cpus boot straight into the kernel from the hypervisor, OBP has no state about that cpu and therefore cannot handle being invoked on that cpu. Luckily it's only a handful of interfaces which can be called after the OBP device tree is obtained. For example, rebooting, halting, powering-off, and setting options node variables. CPU removal support will require some infrastructure changes here. Namely we'll have to process the requests via a true kernel thread instead of in a workqueue. workqueues run on a per-cpu thread, but when unconfiguring we might need to force the thread to execute on another cpu if the current cpu is the one being removed. Removal of a cpu also causes the kernel to destroy that cpu's workqueue running thread. Another issue on removal is that we may have interrupts still pointing to the cpu-to-be-removed. So new code will be needed to walk the active INO list and retarget those cpus as-needed. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2007-07-16[SPARC64]: Add LDOM virtual channel driver and VIO device layer.David S. Miller
Virtual devices on Sun Logical Domains are built on top of a virtual channel framework. This, with help of hypervisor interfaces, provides a link layer protocol with basic handshaking over which virtual device clients and servers communicate. Built on top of this is a VIO device protocol which has it's own handshaking and message types. At this layer attributes are exchanged (disk size, network device addresses, etc.) descriptor rings are registered, and data transfers are triggers and replied to. Signed-off-by: David S. 2007-05-29[SPARC64]: Eliminate NR_CPUS limitations.David S. Miller
Cheetah systems can have cpuids as large as 1023, although physical systems don't have that many cpus. Only three limitations existed in the kernel preventing arbitrary NR_CPUS values: 1) dcache dirty cpu state stored in page->flags on D-cache aliasing platforms. With some build time calculations and some build-time BUG checks on page->flags layout, this one was easily solved. 2) The cheetah XCALL delivery code could only handle a cpumask with up to 32 cpus set. Some simple looping logic clears that up too. 3) thread_info->cpu was a u8, easily changed to a u16. There are a few spots in the kernel that still put NR_CPUS sized arrays on the kernel stack, but that's not a sparc64 specific problem. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

2007-04-26[SPARC64]: Use SPARSEMEM_STATICDavid S. Miller
Decrease the SECTION_SIZE_BITS --> MAX_PHYSADDR_BITS range a little bit. The cost of going to SPARSEMEM_STATIC becomes 8K of BSS space, and in return we save a pointer dereferences on every page struct lookup. Even better we hit the main kernel image for the base address which is in a hugepage locked TLB entry. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
