2009-06-15uml: remove driver_data direct access of struct deviceGreg Kroah-Hartman
In the near future, the driver core is going to not allow direct access to the driver_data pointer in struct device. Instead, the functions dev_get_drvdata() and dev_set_drvdata() should be used. These functions have been around since the beginning, so are backwards compatible with all older kernel versions. 2009-05-11block: implement and enforce request peek/start/fetchTejun Heo
Till now block layer allowed two separate modes of request execution. A request is always acquired from the request queue via elv_next_request(). After that, drivers are free to either dequeue it or process it without dequeueing. Dequeue allows elv_next_request() to return the next request so that multiple requests can be in flight. Executing requests without dequeueing has its merits mostly in allowing drivers for simpler devices which can't do sg to deal with segments only without considering request boundary. However, the benefit this brings is dubious and declining while the cost of the API ambiguity is increasing. Segment based drivers are usually for very old or limited devices and as converting to dequeueing model isn't difficult, it doesn't justify the API overhead it puts on block layer and its more modern users. Previous patches converted all block low level drivers to dequeueing model. This patch completes the API transition by... * renaming elv_next_request() to blk_peek_request() * renaming blkdev_dequeue_request() to blk_start_request() * adding blk_fetch_request() which is combination of peek and start * disallowing completion of queued (not started) requests * applying new API to all LLDs Renamings are for consistency and to break out of tree code so that it's apparent that out of tree drivers need updating. To keep the size of changesets sane we split the switch by drivers; to keep the damn thing bisectable we do the following: 1) rename the affected methods, add ones with correct prototypes, make (few) callers handle both. That's this changeset. 2) for each driver convert to new methods. *ALL* drivers are converted in this series. 3) kill the old (renamed) methods. Note that it _is_ a flagday; all in-tree drivers are converted and by the end of this series no trace of old methods remain. The only reason why we do that this way is to keep the damn thing bisectable and allow per-driver debugging if anything goes wrong. 2008-05-13uml: random driver fixesJeff Dike
The random driver would essentially hang if the host's /dev/random returned -EAGAIN. There was a test of need_resched followed by a schedule inside the loop, but that didn't help and it's the wrong way to work anyway. The right way is to ask for an interrupt when there is input available from the host and handle it then rather than polling. Now, when the host's /dev/random returns -EAGAIN, the driver asks for a wakeup when there's randomness available again and sleeps. The interrupt routine just wakes up whatever processes are sleeping on host_read_wait. There is an atomic_t, host_sleep_count, which counts the number of processes waiting for randomness. When this reaches zero, the interrupt is disabled. An added complication is that async I/O notification was only recently added to /dev/random (by me), so essentially all hosts will lack it. So, we use the sigio workaround here, which is to have a separate thread poll on the descriptor and send an interrupt when there is input on it. This mechanism is activated when a process gets -EAGAIN (activating this multiple times is harmless, if a bit wasteful) and deactivated by the last process still waiting. The module name was changed from "random" to "hw_random" in order for udev to recognize it. The sigio workaround needed some changes. sigio_broken was added for cases when we know that async notification doesn't work. This is now called from maybe_sigio_broken, which deals with pts devices. Reintroduce uml_kmalloc for the benefit of UML libc code. The previous tactic of declaring __kmalloc so it could be called directly from the libc side of the house turned out to be getting too intimate with slab, and it doesn't work with slob. So, the uml_kmalloc wrapper is back. It calls kmalloc or whatever that translates into, and libc code calls it. kfree is left alone since that still works, leaving a somewhat inconsistent API. IFF_ALLMULTI is an indication from the network stack to the driver to disable multicast filters, drivers should never set it directly. Since the UML networking device doesn't have any filtering capabilites, it doesn't the set_multicast_list function at all, it is kept so userspace can still issue SIOCADDMULTI/SIOCDELMULTI ioctls however. This is the central patch of a cleanup series. In most cases there is no good reason why someone would want to use a dentry for itself. This series reflects that fact and embeds a struct path into nameidata.
