2007-07-12Use a new CPU feature word to cover features that are spread aroundVenki Pallipadi
Some Intel features are spread around in different CPUID leafs like 0x5, 0x6 and 0xA. Make this feature detection code common across i386 and x86_64. Display Intel Dynamic Acceleration feature in /proc/cpuinfo. This feature will be enabled automatically by current acpi-cpufreq driver. Refer to Intel Software Developer's Manual for more details about the feature. Thanks to hpa (H Peter Anvin) for the making the actual code detecting the scattered features data-driven. 2007-07-12Unify the CPU features vectors between i386 and x86-64H. Peter Anvin
Unify the handling of the CPU features vectors between i386 and x86-64. This also adopts the collapsing of features which are required at compile-time into constant tests from x86-64 to i386. Signed-off-by: H. Peter Anvin <hpa@zytor.com> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2007-05-11x86_64: Don't call mtrr_bp_init from identify_cpuAndi Kleen
The code was ok, but triggered warnings for calling __init from __cpuinit. Instead call it from check_bugs instead. Signed-off-by: Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2007-05-07Revert "[PATCH] x86: __pa and __pa_symbol address space separation"Linus Torvalds
This was broken. It adds complexity, for no good reason. Rather than separate __pa() and __pa_symbol(), we should deprecate __pa_symbol(), and preferably __pa() too - and just use "virt_to_phys()" instead, which is more readable and has nicer semantics. However, right now, just undo the separation, and make __pa_symbol() be the exact same as __pa(). That fixes the bugs this patch introduced, and we can do the fairly obvious cleanups later. Do the new __phys_addr() function (which is now the actual workhorse for the unified __pa()/__pa_symbol()) as a real external function, that way all the potential issues with compile/link-time optimizations of constant symbol addresses go away, and we can also, if we choose to, add more sanity-checking of the argument. 2007-05-02[PATCH] x86: Don't use MWAIT on AMD Family 10Andi Kleen
It doesn't put the CPU into deeper sleep states, so it's better to use the standard idle loop to save power. But allow to reenable it anyways for benchmarking. I also removed the obsolete idle=halt on i386 Cc: andreas.herrmann@amd.com Signed-off-by: Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de>
2007-05-02[PATCH] x86: remove constant_tsc reporting from /proc/cpuinfo' power flagsJoerg Roedel
remove the reporting of the constant_tsc flag from the "power management" field in /proc/cpuinfo. The NULL value there was replaced by "" because the former would result in a printout of [8] if the flag is set. 2007-05-02[PATCH] x86: __pa and __pa_symbol address space separationVivek Goyal
Currently __pa_symbol is for use with symbols in the kernel address map and __pa is for use with pointers into the physical memory map. But the code is implemented so you can usually interchange the two. __pa which is much more common can be implemented much more cheaply if it is it doesn't have to worry about any other kernel address spaces. This is especially true with a relocatable kernel as __pa_symbol needs to peform an extra variable read to resolve the address. There is a third macro that is added for the vsyscall data __pa_vsymbol for finding the physical addesses of vsyscall pages. Most of this patch is simply sorting through the references to __pa or __pa_symbol and using the proper one. A little of it is continuing to use a physical address when we have it instead of recalculating it several times. swapper_pgd is now NULL. leave_mm now uses init_mm.pgd and init_mm.pgd is initialized at boot (instead of compile time) to the physmem virtual mapping of init_level4_pgd. The physical address changed. Except for the for EMPTY_ZERO page all of the remaining references to __pa_symbol appear to be during kernel initialization. So this should reduce the cost of __pa in the common case, even on a relocated kernel. As this is technically a semantic change we need to be on the lookout for anything I missed. But it works for me (tm). Signed-off-by: Eric W. Biederman <ebiederm@xmission.com> Signed-off-by: Vivek Goyal <vgoyal@in.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de>
2007-05-02[PATCH] x86-64: Remove the identity mapping as early as possibleVivek Goyal
With the rewrite of the SMP trampoline and the early page allocator there is nothing that needs identity mapped pages, once we start executing C code. So add zap_identity_mappings into head64.c and remove zap_low_mappings() from much later in the code. The functions are subtly different thus the name change. This also kills boot_level4_pgt which was from an earlier attempt to move the identity mappings as early as possible, and is now no longer needed. Essentially I have replaced boot_level4_pgt with trampoline_level4_pgt in trampoline.S Signed-off-by: Eric W. 2007-05-02[PATCH] x86-64: 64bit PIC SMP trampolineVivek Goyal
This modifies the SMP trampoline and all of the associated code so it can jump to a 64bit kernel loaded at an arbitrary address. The dependencies on having an idenetity mapped page in the kernel page tables for SMP bootup have all been removed. In addition the trampoline has been modified to verify that long mode is supported. Asking if long mode is implemented is down right silly but we have traditionally had some of these checks, and they can't hurt anything. So when the totally ludicrous happens we just might handle it correctly. Signed-off-by: Eric W. 2007-02-13[PATCH] x86: Unify pcspeaker platform device code between i386/x86-64Andi Kleen

2007-02-13[PATCH] x86: Add new CPUID bits for AMD Family 10 CPUs in /proc/cpuinfoAndi Kleen
Just various new acronyms. The new popcnt bit is in the middle of Intel space. This looks a little weird, but I've been assured it's ok. Also I fixed RDTSCP for i386 which was at the wrong place. For i386 and x86-64. Signed-off-by: Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de>

2007-02-13[PATCH] x86-64: Allocate the NUMA hash function nodemap dynamicallyAmul Shah
Remove the statically allocated memory to NUMA node hash map in favor of a dynamically allocated memory to node hash map (it is cache aligned). This patch has the nice side effect in that it allows the hash map to grow for systems with large amounts of memory (256GB - 1TB), but suffer from having small PCI space tacked onto the boot node (which is somewhere between 192MB to 512MB on the ES7000). 2006-12-07[PATCH] x86-64: Mark rdtsc as sync only for netburst, not for core2Arjan van de Ven
On the Core2 cpus, the rdtsc instruction is not serializing (as defined in the architecture reference since rdtsc exists) and due to the deep speculation of these cores, it's possible that you can observe time go backwards between cores due to this speculation. Since the kernel already deals with this with the SYNC_RDTSC flag, the solution is simple, only assume that the instruction is serializing on family 15... The price one pays for this is a slightly slower gettimeofday (by a dozen or two cycles), but that increase is quite small to pay for a really-going-forward tsc counter. 2006-12-07[PATCH] x86-64: Synchronize RDTSC on single core AMDAndi Kleen

2006-09-26[PATCH] Make swsusp avoid memory holes and reserved memory regions on x86_64Rafael J. Wysocki
On x86_64 machines with more than 2 GB of RAM there are large memory gaps (with no corresponding kernel virtual addresses) and reserved memory regions between areas of usable physical RAM. Moreover, if CONFIG_FLATMEM is set, they appear within the normal zone. swsusp should not try to save them, so the corresponding page structs have to be marked as 'nosave'. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. 2006-09-26[PATCH] Remove need for early lockdep initAndi Kleen
I think it was only needed for the printks and we can do them later. I put in a single early_printk so that we know the kernel is alive (early_printk doesn't need any locks) This makes some things easier for initialization of unwind for lockdep, which is needed by later patches. cc: mingo@elte.hu Signed-off-by: Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de>
2006-09-26[PATCH] Convert x86-64 to early paramAndi Kleen
Instead of hackish manual parsing Requires earlier i386 patchkit, but also fixes i386 early_printk again. I removed some obsolete really early parameters which didn't do anything useful. Also made a few parameters that needed it early (mostly oops printing setup) Also removed one panic check that wasn't visible without early console anyways (the early console is now initialized after that panic) This cleans up a lot of code. 2006-09-26[PATCH] initialize end of memory variables as early as possibleJan Beulich
While an earlier patch already did a small step into that direction, this patch moves initialization of all memory end variables to as early as possible, so that dependent code doesn't need to check whether these variables have already been set. 2006-08-30[PATCH] x86_64: Recover 1MB of kernel memoryAndi Kleen
Noticed by Jan Beulich. When the kernel was moved from 1MB to 2MB in 2.6.17 the kernel reservation code wasn't adjusted and it still reserved starting with 1MB. This means 1MB always were lost. 2006-06-26[PATCH] x86_64: i386/x86-64 Add nmi watchdog support for new Intel CPUsVenkatesh Pallipadi
Intel now has support for Architectural Performance Monitoring Counters ( Refer to IA-32 Intel Architecture Software Developer's Manual http://www.intel.com/design/pentium4/manuals/253669.htm ). This feature is present starting from Intel Core Duo and Intel Core Solo processors. What this means is, the performance monitoring counters and some performance monitoring events are now defined in an architectural way (using cpuid). And there will be no need to check for family/model etc for these architectural events. Below is the patch to use this performance counters in nmi watchdog driver. In creating these, code was moved around for abstraction, uniformity, and consiceness. Take note of the move of the iommu_setup bootarg parsing code to __setup. This is enabled by moving back the location of the aperture allocation/detection to mem init (which while ugly, was already the location of the swiotlb_init). While a slight departure from the previous patch, I belive this provides the true intention of the previous versions of the patch which changed this code. It also makes the addition of the upcoming calgary code much cleaner than previous patches.
