2009-06-12Driver Core: Rework platform suspend/resume, print warningMagnus Damm
This patch reworks the platform driver code for legacy suspend and resume to avoid installing callbacks in struct device_driver. A warning is also added telling users to update the platform driver to use dev_pm_ops. The functions platform_legacy_suspend()/resume() directly call suspend and resume callbacks in struct platform_driver instead of wrapping things in platform_drv_suspend()/resume(). 2009-06-12PM: Remove device_type suspend()/resume()Magnus Damm
This patch removes the legacy callbacks ->suspend() and ->resume() from struct device_type. These callbacks seem unused, and new code should instead make use of struct dev_pm_ops. 2009-06-12PM: Remove bus_type suspend_late()/resume_early() V2Magnus Damm
Remove the ->suspend_late() and ->resume_early() callbacks from struct bus_type V2. These callbacks are legacy stuff at this point and since there seem to be no in-tree users we may as well remove them. New users should use dev_pm_ops. 2009-06-12PM core: rename suspend and resume functionsAlan Stern
This patch (as1241) renames a bunch of functions in the PM core. Rather than go through a boring list of name changes, suffice it to say that in the end we have a bunch of pairs of functions: device_resume_noirq dpm_resume_noirq device_resume dpm_resume device_complete dpm_complete device_suspend_noirq dpm_suspend_noirq device_suspend dpm_suspend device_prepare dpm_prepare in which device_X does the X operation on a single device and dpm_X invokes device_X for all devices in the dpm_list. In addition, the old dpm_power_up and device_resume_noirq have been combined into a single function (dpm_resume_noirq). Lastly, dpm_suspend_start and dpm_resume_end are the renamed versions of the former top-level device_suspend and device_resume routines. 2009-06-12PM: Rename device_power_down/up()Magnus Damm
Rename the functions performing "_noirq" dev_pm_ops operations from device_power_down() and device_power_up() to device_suspend_noirq() and device_resume_noirq(). The new function names are chosen to show that the functions are responsible for calling the _noirq() versions to finalize the suspend/resume operation. The current function names do not perform power down/up anymore so the names may be misleading. Global function renames: - device_power_down() -> device_suspend_noirq() - device_power_up() -> device_resume_noirq() Static function renames: - suspend_device_noirq() -> __device_suspend_noirq() - resume_device_noirq() -> __device_resume_noirq() Signed-off-by: Magnus Damm <damm@igel.co.jp> Acked-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de> Acked-by: Len Brown <lenb@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Rafael J. 2009-06-12PM: Warn if interrupts are enabled during suspend-resume of sysdevsRafael J. Wysocki
Sysdevs have to be suspended and resumed with interrupts disabled and things usually break in a way that's difficult to debug if one of sysdev drivers enables interrupts by mistake during suspend or resume. Add extra checks that will generate warnings in such cases. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. Wysocki <rjw@sisk.pl>

2009-05-24PM: Do not hold dpm_list_mtx while disabling/enabling nonboot CPUsRafael J. Wysocki
We shouldn't hold dpm_list_mtx while executing [disable|enable]_nonboot_cpus(), because theoretically this may lead to a deadlock as shown by the following example (provided by Johannes Berg): CPU 3 CPU 2 CPU 1 suspend/hibernate something: rtnl_lock() device_pm_lock() -> mutex_lock(&dpm_list_mtx) mutex_lock(&dpm_list_mtx) linkwatch_work -> rtnl_lock() disable_nonboot_cpus() -> flush CPU 3 workqueue Fortunately, device drivers are supposed to stop any activities that might lead to the registration of new device objects way before disable_nonboot_cpus() is called, so it shouldn't be necessary to hold dpm_list_mtx over the entire late part of device suspend and early part of device resume. Thus, during the late suspend and the early resume of devices acquire dpm_list_mtx only when dpm_list is going to be traversed and release it right after that. This patch is reported to fix the regressions tracked as http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13245. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. Rather than calling vmalloc() repeatedly to grow the firmware image as we receive data from userspace, just allocate and fill individual pages. Then vmap() the whole lot in one go when we're done. A quick test with a 337KiB iwlagn firmware shows the time taken for request_firmware() going from ~32ms to ~5ms after I apply this patch. 2009-05-08Revert driver core: move platform_data into platform_deviceGreg Kroah-Hartman
This reverts commit 006f4571a15fae3a0575f2a0f9e9b63b3d1012f8: This patch moves platform_data from struct device into struct platform_device, based on the two ideas: 1. Now all platform_driver is registered by platform_driver_register, which makes probe()/release()/... of platform_driver passed parameter of platform_device *, so platform driver can get platform_data from platform_device; 2. Other kind of devices do not need to use platform_data, we can decrease size of device if moving it to platform_device. Taking into consideration of thousands of files to be fixed and they can't be finished in one night(maybe it will take a long time), so we keep platform_data in device to allow two kind of cases coexist until all platform devices pass its platfrom data from platform_device->platform_data. 2009-04-21driver synchronization: make scsi_wait_scan more advancedArjan van de Ven
There is currently only one way for userspace to say "wait for my storage device to get ready for the modules I just loaded": to load the scsi_wait_scan module. Expectations of userspace are that once this module is loaded, all the (storage) devices for which the drivers were loaded before the module load are present. Now, there are some issues with the implementation, and the async stuff got caught in the middle of this: The existing code only waits for the scsy async probing to finish, but it did not take into account at all that probing might not have begun yet. (Russell ran into this problem on his computer and the fix works for him) This patch fixes this more thoroughly than the previous "fix", which had some bad side effects (namely, for kernel code that wanted to wait for the scsi scan it would also do an async sync, which would deadlock if you did it from async context already.. there's a report about that on lkml): The patch makes the module first wait for all device driver probes, and then it will wait for the scsi parallel scan to finish. 2009-04-20driver: dont update dev_name via device_add pathKay Sievers
notice one system /proc/iomem some entries missed the name for pci_devices it turns that dev->dev.kobj name is changed after device_add. for pci code: via acpi_pci_root_driver.ops.add (aka acpi_pci_root_add) ==> pci_acpi_scan_root is used to scan pci bus/device, and at the same time we read the resource for pci_dev in the pci_read_bases, we have res->name = pci_name(pci_dev); pci_name is calling dev_name. later via acpi_pci_root_driver.ops.start (aka acpi_pci_root_start) ==> pci_bus_add_device to add all pci_dev in kobj tree. pci_bus_add_device will call device_add. actually in device_add /* first, register with generic layer. */ error = kobject_add(&dev->kobj, dev->kobj.parent, "%s", dev_name(dev)); if (error) goto Error; will get one new name for that kobj, old name is freed. 2009-04-16Driver Core: early platform driverMagnus Damm
V3 of the early platform driver implementation. Platform drivers are great for embedded platforms because we can separate driver configuration from the actual driver. So base addresses, interrupts and other configuration can be kept with the processor or board code, and the platform driver can be reused by many different platforms. For early devices we have nothing today. For instance, to configure early timers and early serial ports we cannot use platform devices. This because the setup order during boot. Timers are needed before the platform driver core code is available. The same goes for early printk support. Early in this case means before initcalls. These early drivers today have their configuration either hard coded or they receive it using some special configuration method. This is working quite well, but if we want to support both regular kernel modules and early devices then we need to have two ways of configuring the same driver. A single way would be better. The early platform driver patch is basically a set of functions that allow drivers to register themselves and architecture code to locate them and probe. Registration happens through early_param(). The time for the probe is decided by the architecture code. See Documentation/driver-model/platform.txt for more details. Use the functions introduced in by the previous patch, suspend_device_irqs(), resume_device_irqs() and check_wakeup_irqs(), to rework the handling of interrupts during suspend (hibernation) and resume. Namely, interrupts will only be disabled on the CPU right before suspending sysdevs, while device drivers will be prevented from receiving interrupts, with the help of the new helper function, before their "late" suspend callbacks run (and analogously during resume). In addition, since the device interrups are now disabled before the CPU has turned all interrupts off and the CPU will ACK the interrupts setting the IRQ_PENDING bit for them, check in sysdev_suspend() if any wake-up interrupts are pending and abort suspend if that's the case. This patch implements uevent suppress in kobject and removes it from struct device, based on the following ideas: 1,Uevent sending should be one attribute of kobject, so suppressing it in kobject layer is more natural than in device layer. By this way, we can do it for other objects embedded with kobject. 2,It may save several bytes for each instance of struct device.(On my omap3(32bit ARM) based box, can save 8bytes per device object) This patch also introduces dev_set|get_uevent_suppress() helpers to set and query uevent_suppress attribute in case to help kobject as private part of struct device in future. This patch removes 100ms polling for driver_probe_done in wait_for_device_probe(), and uses wait_event() instead. Removing polling in fs initialization may lead to a faster boot. This patch also changes the return type of wait_for_device_done() from int to void. This patch is against Arjan's patch in linux-next tree. 2009-03-24driver-core: do not register a driver with bus_type not registeredDave Young
If the bus_type is not registerd, driver_register to that bus will cause oops. I found this bug when test built-in usb serial drivers (ie. aircable driver) with 'nousb' cmdline params. In this patch: 1. set the bus->p=NULL when bus_register failed and unregisterd. 2. if bus->p is NULL, driver_register BUG_ON will be triggered. 2009-03-24platform: introduce module id table for platform devicesEric Miao
Now platform_device is being widely used on SoC processors where the peripherals are attached to the system bus, which is simple enough. However, silicon IPs for these SoCs are usually shared heavily across a family of processors, even products from different companies. This makes the original simple driver name based matching insufficient, or simply not straight-forward. Introduce a module id table for platform devices, and makes it clear that a platform driver is able to support some shared IP and handle slight differences across different platforms (by 'driver_data'). Module alias is handled automatically when a MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE() is defined. To not disturb the current platform drivers too much, the matched id entry is recorded and can be retrieved by platform_get_device_id(). 2009-03-24driver core: check bus->match without holding device lockMing Lei
This patch moves bus->match out from driver_probe_device and does not hold device lock to check the match between a device and a driver. The idea has been verified by the commit 6cd495860901, which leads to a faster boot. But the commit 6cd495860901 has the following drawbacks: 1),only does the quick check in the path of __driver_attach->driver_probe_device, not in other paths; 2),for a matched device and driver, check the same match twice. It is a waste of cpu ,especially for some drivers with long device id table (eg. usb-storage driver). This patch adds a helper of driver_match_device to check the match in all paths, and testes the match only once.
