Gabriel C reports lguest doesn't compile with CONFIG_BLOCK=n. Fix this by introducing a config var for the block device, which depends on LGUEST && BLOCK. Do the same for the net driver, rather then depending gratuitously on CONFIG_NET. 2007-07-20mm: Remove slab destructors from kmem_cache_create().Paul Mundt
Slab destructors were no longer supported after Christoph's c59def9f222d44bb7e2f0a559f2906191a0862d7 change. They've been BUGs for both slab and slub, and slob never supported them either. This rips out support for the dtor pointer from kmem_cache_create() completely and fixes up every single callsite in the kernel (there were about 224, not including the slab allocator definitions themselves, or the documentation references). 2007-07-17Freezer: make kernel threads nonfreezable by defaultRafael J. Wysocki
Currently, the freezer treats all tasks as freezable, except for the kernel threads that explicitly set the PF_NOFREEZE flag for themselves. This approach is problematic, since it requires every kernel thread to either set PF_NOFREEZE explicitly, or call try_to_freeze(), even if it doesn't care for the freezing of tasks at all. It seems better to only require the kernel threads that want to or need to be frozen to use some freezer-related code and to remove any freezer-related code from the other (nonfreezable) kernel threads, which is done in this patch. The patch causes all kernel threads to be nonfreezable by default (ie. to have PF_NOFREEZE set by default) and introduces the set_freezable() function that should be called by the freezable kernel threads in order to unset PF_NOFREEZE. It also makes all of the currently freezable kernel threads call set_freezable(), so it shouldn't cause any (intentional) change of behaviour to appear. 2007-07-16[SPARC64]: Abstract out mdesc accesses for better MD update handling.David S. Miller
Since we have to be able to handle MD updates, having an in-tree set of data structures representing the MD objects actually makes things more painful. The MD itself is easy to parse, and we can implement the existing interfaces using direct parsing of the MD binary image. The MD is now reference counted, so accesses have to now take the form: handle = mdesc_grab(); ... operations on MD ... mdesc_release(handle); The only remaining issue are cases where code holds on to references to MD property values. mdesc_get_property() returns a direct pointer to the property value, most cases just pull in the information they need and discard the pointer, but there are few that use the pointer directly over a long lifetime. Those will be fixed up in a subsequent changeset. A preliminary handler for MD update events from domain services is there, it is rudimentry but it works and handles all of the reference counting. It does not check the generation number of the MDs, and it does not generate a "add/delete" list for notification to interesting parties about MD changes but that will be forthcoming. bsg uses scsi_cmd_ioctl() for some SCSI/sg ioctl commands. scsi_cmd_ioctl() gets a request queue from a gendisk arguement. This prevents bsg being bound to SCSI devices that don't have a gendisk (like OSD). This adds a request_queue argument to scsi_cmd_ioctl(). The SCSI/sg ioctl commands doesn't use a gendisk so it's safe for any SCSI devices to use scsi_cmd_ioctl(). sysfs is now completely out of driver/module lifetime game. After deletion, a sysfs node doesn't access anything outside sysfs proper, so there's no reason to hold onto the attribute owners. Note that often the wrong modules were accounted for as owners leading to accessing removed modules. This patch kills now unnecessary attribute->owner. Note that with this change, userland holding a sysfs node does not prevent the backing module from being unloaded. The name 'pin' was badly chosen, it doesn't pin a pipe buffer in the most commonly used sense in the kernel. So change the name to 'confirm', after debating this issue with Hugh Dickins a bit. 2007-05-18cciss: Fix pci_driver.shutdown while device is still activeGerald Britton
Fix an Oops in the cciss driver caused by system shutdown while a filesystem on a cciss device is still active. The cciss_remove_one function only properly removes the device if the device has been cleanly released by its users, which is not the case when the pci_driver.shutdown method is called. This patch adds a new cciss_shutdown function to better match the pattern used by various SCSI drivers: deactivate device interrupts and flush caches. It also alters the cciss_remove_one function to match and readds the __devexit annotation that was removed when cciss_remove_one was serving as the pci_driver.shutdown method.
