2009-07-08Remove multiple KERN_ prefixes from printk formatsJoe Perches
Commit 5fd29d6ccbc98884569d6f3105aeca70858b3e0f ("printk: clean up handling of log-levels and newlines") changed printk semantics. printk lines with multiple KERN_<level> prefixes are no longer emitted as before the patch. <level> is now included in the output on each additional use. Remove all uses of multiple KERN_<level>s in formats. Signed-off-by: Joe Perches <joe@perches.com> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2009-06-17net: fix network drivers ndo_start_xmit() return valuesPatrick McHardy
Fix up remaining drivers returning a magic or an errno value from their ndo_start_xmit() functions that were missed in the first pass: - isdn_net: missed conversion - bpqether: missed conversion: skb is freed, so return NETDEV_TX_OK - hp100: intention appears to be to resubmit skb once resources are available, but due to no queue handling it is dropped for now. - lapbether: skb is freed, so return NETDEV_TX_OK Signed-off-by: Patrick McHardy <kaber@trash.net> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

2009-06-13net: use symbolic values for ndo_start_xmit() return codesPatrick McHardy
Convert magic values 1 and -1 to NETDEV_TX_BUSY and NETDEV_TX_LOCKED respectively. 0 (NETDEV_TX_OK) is not changed to keep the noise down, except in very few cases where its in direct proximity to one of the other values. 2009-06-13net: fix network drivers ndo_start_xmit() return values (part 4)Patrick McHardy
Fix up WAN drivers that return an errno value to qdisc_restart(), causing qdisc_restart() to print a warning an requeue/retransmit the skb. - cycx_x25: intention appears to be to requeue the skb Does not compile cleanly for me even without this patch, so untested. This replaces dma_sync_single() with dma_sync_single_for_cpu() because dma_sync_single() is an obsolete API; include/linux/dma-mapping.h says: /* Backwards compat, remove in 2.7.x */ #define dma_sync_single dma_sync_single_for_cpu #define dma_sync_sg dma_sync_sg_for_cpu Signed-off-by: FUJITA Tomonori <fujita.tomonori@lab.ntt.co.jp> Signed-off-by: David S. 2009-05-18net: release dst entry in dev_hard_start_xmit()Eric Dumazet
One point of contention in high network loads is the dst_release() performed when a transmited skb is freed. This is because NIC tx completion calls dev_kree_skb() long after original call to dev_queue_xmit(skb). CPU cache is cold and the atomic op in dst_release() stalls. On SMP, this is quite visible if one CPU is 100% handling softirqs for a network device, since dst_clone() is done by other cpus, involving cache line ping pongs. It seems right place to release dst is in dev_hard_start_xmit(), for most devices but ones that are virtual, and some exceptions. David Miller suggested to define a new device flag, set in alloc_netdev_mq() (so that most devices set it at init time), and carefuly unset in devices which dont want a NULL skb->dst in their ndo_start_xmit(). List of devices that must clear this flag is : - loopback device, because it calls netif_rx() and quoting Patrick : "ip_route_input() doesn't accept loopback addresses, so loopback packets already need to have a dst_entry attached." - appletalk/ipddp.c : needs skb->dst in its xmit function - And all devices that call again dev_queue_xmit() from their xmit function (as some classifiers need skb->dst) : bonding, vlan, macvlan, eql, ifb, hdlc_fr Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <dada1@cosmosbay.com> Signed-off-by: David S. 2009-03-16Rationalize fasync return valuesJonathan Corbet
Most fasync implementations do something like: return fasync_helper(...); But fasync_helper() will return a positive value at times - a feature used in at least one place. Thus, a number of other drivers do: err = fasync_helper(...); if (err < 0) return err; return 0; In the interests of consistency and more concise code, it makes sense to map positive return values onto zero where ->fasync() is called.
