2008-07-14[S390] qdio: Repair timeout handling for qdio_shutdownUrsula Braun
If qdio shutdown runs in parallel with a channel error, the qdio_timeout_handler might not be triggered. In this case neither state INACTIVE nor state ERR is reached and the following wait_event hangs forever. Solution: do not make use of ccw_device_set_timeout(), but add a timeout to the following wait_event. And make sure, wake_up is called in case of an i/o error on the qdio-device. Remove proc_root export. Creation and removal works well if parent PDE is supplied as NULL -- it worked always that way. So, one useless export removed and consistency added, some drivers created PDEs with &proc_root as parent but removed them as NULL and so on. 2008-04-17[S390] qdio: Unrecognized inbound traffic if many FCP devices are onlineUrsula Braun
Problem: Usually every FCP device has its own indicator field the adapter uses to signal outstanding work. Once a certain limit of devices is reached, a common indicator field is used. In certain scenarios qdio resets this common indicator field, but handles only part of the FCP-devices sharing the common indicator field. Thus inbound traffic on the non-processed shared FCP-devices is not recognized immediately. Solution: Make sure common indicator field is reset only, if all FCP-devices sharing the indicator are processed. 2008-02-19[S390] qdio: fix qdio_activate timeout handling.Heiko Carstens
Current code in qdio_activate waits for at least 5 seconds until it returns. It may return earlier if an error occurs, but not if everything is ok. This large timeout value became visible with commit dfa77f611ff295598e218aa0eb6efa73a5cf26d0 "qdio: set QDIO_ACTIVATE_TIMEOUT to 5s", which intended to fix the timeout value which was zero. In turn setting an FCP adapter online took 5 seconds. In practice waiting for 5ms before continuing is sufficient as pointed out by Utz Bacher and Cornelia Huck. If qdio establish runs in parallel with a channel error, ccw_device_start_timeout may not trigger the qdio_timeout_handler. Hipersocket Multicast queue works asynchronously. When sending buffers, the buffer state change may happen delayed. The tasklet for checking changes in the outbound queue excluded IQDIO async queues from this process. This created either a hang situation when the queue ran full, or presented a hang situation a interface close time. 2007-08-22[S390] qdio: fix EQBS handling on CCQ96Klaus D. Wacker
QDIO returned from EQBS instruction in any case after return code CCQ=96 was issued regardless whether buffer states for at least one buffer were extracted or not. This caused FCP devices to hang when running under z/VM and having QIOASSASIST=ON and having high I/O rates. In order to fix this qdio return code processing of EQBS instruction after CCQ=96 is changed that buffers are returned and if no buffers where extracted the instruction is repeated at once. The slsb structure contained at the beginning of the qdio_q structure must start on a 256 byte boundary. To make sure this is the case even if slab debugging is turned on create an own slab cache for qdio_q structures. Besides that don't use the slab allocator to allocate whole pages. Use the page allocator instead. Also fix a few memory leaks in error handling code. 2007-07-17[S390] qdio: output queue stall on FCP and network devicesFrank Pavlic
When running QIOASSIST enabled qdio devices in a z/VM environment the output queue for such devices stall in heavy workload situations. When SQBS and EQBS instructions returns CCQ=96 qdio does not reissue the instruction again with the register settings done by millicode but processed the returned qdio buffer. This is wrong. qdio has to reissue the instruction once again on CCQ=96, as we already do it for CCQ=97. 2007-02-12[S390] cio: Fixup interface for setting options on ccw devices.Cornelia Huck
The current ccw_device_set_options() sets a specified mask of options and clears those not specified, but there is no way to find out which options have already been set. In order to fix this up, introduce the following interface changes: ccw_device_set_options() now only sets the specified bits, but does not clear those that are not specified. ccw_device_clear_options() clears the specified bits. ccw_device_set_options_mask() provides the old semantics (setting only the specified bits and clearing the others). With CONFIG_SLAB_DEBUG=y networking over qeth doesn't work. The problem is that the qib structure embedded in the qeth_irq structure needs an alignment of 256 but kmalloc only guarantees an alignment of 8. When using SLAB debugging the alignment of qeth_irq is not sufficient for the embedded qib structure which causes all users of qdio (qeth and zfcp) to stop working. Allocate qeth_irq structure with __get_free_page. That wastes a small amount of memory (~2500 bytes) per online adapter. Using FCP devices with V=V support, the input queue stalled when CCQ 97 had been returned in qdio_do_eqbs. When this happen we have to reissue the eqbs instruction. Another bug was when V=V was enabled we checked if hardware has SIGA-sync support. If not we returned with 0 from tiqdio_is_inbound_q_done. Thus qdio lost initiative on FCP devices and input queue stalled. Running devices in V=V there is no SIGA-sync support but nevertheless we have to process tiqdio_is_inbound_q_done either. New feature V=V qdio pass-through. QDIO and HiperSockets processing in z/VM V=V guest environments (as well as V=R with z/VM running in LPAR mode) requires shadowing of all QDIO architecture queue elements. Especially the shadowing of SBALs and SLSBs structures in the hypervisor, and the need to issue SIGA SYNC operations to observe state changes, eventually causes significant CPU processing overhead in the hypervisor. The QDIO pass-through support for V=V guests avoids the shadowing of SBALs and SLSBs. This significantly reduces the hypervisor overhead for QDIO based I/O.
