2007-10-16fbdev: change asm/uaccess.h to linux/uaccess.hKrzysztof Helt
This patch replaces <asm/uaccess.h> with <linux/uaccess.h> after the checkpatch.pl hint. The include of <asm/uaccess.h> is removed if the driver does not use it. 2007-08-11matroxfb: rectify jitter (G450/G550)Paul A. Clarke
This builds upon my previous attempts to resolve some jitter problems seen with the Matrox G450 and G550 -based cards, including odd disparities observed between x86 and Power -based machines in a somewhat less hackish way (removing the hacked ifdefs). Apparently, preference should be given to use the DVI PLL when frequencies permit, the Standard PLL otherwise. The max pixel clock for the panellink interface is extracted from the PInS information on the card and used as a limit to determine which PLL to use. Signed-off-by: Paul A. 2007-07-11PCI: Change all drivers to use pci_device->revisionAuke Kok
Instead of all drivers reading pci config space to get the revision ID, they can now use the pci_device->revision member. This exposes some issues where drivers where reading a word or a dword for the revision number, and adding useless error-handling around the read. Some drivers even just read it for no purpose of all. In devices where the revision ID is being copied over and used in what appears to be the equivalent of hotpath, I have left the copy code and the cached copy as not to influence the driver's performance. Compile tested with make all{yes, mod}config on x86_64 and i386. 2007-05-01i2c: Shrink struct i2c_clientDavid Brownell
This shrinks the size of "struct i2c_client" by 40 bytes: - Substantially shrinks the string used to identify the chip type - The "flags" don't need to be so big - Removes some internal padding It also adds kerneldoc for that struct, explaining how "name" is really a chip type identifier; it's otherwise potentially confusing. Because the I2C_NAME_SIZE symbol was abused for both i2c_client.name and for i2c_adapter.name, this needed to affect i2c_adapter too. The adapters which used that symbol now use the more-obviously-correct idiom of taking the size of that field. JD: Shorten i2c_adapter.name from 50 to 48 bytes while we're here, to avoid wasting space in padding. 2006-10-05IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlersDavid Howells
Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the Linux kernel. The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path (ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()). Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception handling. Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing. I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers. I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile with minimal configurations. This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy. Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one: struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs); And put the old one back at the end: set_irq_regs(old_regs); Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ(). In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary: - update_process_times(user_mode(regs)); - profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs); + update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs())); + profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING); I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself, except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode(). Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers: (*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in the input_dev struct. (*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs pointer or not. (*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type irq_handler_t. 2006-08-27[PATCH] matroxfb: fix jittery display on non-ppc systemsPaul A. Clarke
I wish I was happier about this patch. It'll serve as a placeholder for the moment. I'm still trying to get a G550 working in order to even reproduce the problem this patch introduces. I find that the G450 has jitter even without this patch, so it won't show me what the patch changed. At this point, I'll continue trying to get the G550 to work, and in parallel work with the G450 to work out the kinks. The patch is below. Set XDVICLKCTRL only on PPC, as doing this apparently introduces jitter on the G550, at least on x86 architectures. Signed-off-by: Paul A. 2006-05-21[PATCH] matroxfb: fix DVI setup to be more compatiblePaul A. Clarke
There has been a longstanding problem with the Matrox G450 and perhaps other similar cards, with modes "above" 1280x1024-60 on ppc/ppc64 boxes running Linux. Higher resolutions and/or higher refresh rates resulted in a very noticably "jittery" display, and sometimes no display, depending on the physical monitor. This patch fixes that problem on the systems I have easy access to... I've tested with SLES9SP3 (2.6.5+ kernel) and 2.6.16-rc6 custom kernels on an IBM eServer p5 520 w/G450 (a.k.a GXT135P on IBM's ppc64 systems), and a colleague of mine (Ian Romanick) tested it successfully on an Apple ppc32 box (w/GXT135P). I also tested it on IA32 box I have with a GXT135P to verify that it didn't obviously break anything. In my testing, I covered single-card, single and dual-head setups using both HD15 and DVI-D signals, on both the IA32 and ppc64 boxes. While everything appeared fine on both boxes, I did encounter one problem: I can't get any signal on the DVI-D output on the ppc64 box. However, this is also the case without my patch. I just noticed that screen-blanking only occurs on the primary display as well. Signed-off-by: Paul A. 2006-03-28[PATCH] powerpc: Kill _machine and hard-coded platform numbersBenjamin Herrenschmidt
This removes statically assigned platform numbers and reworks the powerpc platform probe code to use a better mechanism. With this, board support files can simply declare a new machine type with a macro, and implement a probe() function that uses the flattened device-tree to detect if they apply for a given machine. We now have a machine_is() macro that replaces the comparisons of _machine with the various PLATFORM_* constants. Add new entries for Mystique AGP with the PCI ID 0x051e. I don't actually have such boards but according to google they do exist. Curiosly X.Org doesn't recognize that PCI ID. And what's even more interesting is that Matrox's own Windows drivers don't recognize it either. After going through about a dozen different versions I did find one older driver that does list this particular ID. It is also listed in the pci.ids file. I'm not sure if non-220 AGP chips exist. I left the chip revision check intact for AGP chips nonetheless. Signed-off-by: Ville Syrjälä <syrjala@sci.fi> Signed-off-by: Petr Vandrovec <petr@vandrovec.name> Cc: "Antonino A. 2005-11-07[PATCH] matroxfb: Remove an unused wait queue entryVille Syrjälä
wait_event_event_interruptible() uses a private wait queue entry so there's no need for the caller to initialize one. 2005-11-07[PATCH] fbcon/fbdev: Move softcursor out of fbdev to fbconAntonino A. Daplas
According to Jon Smirl, filling in the field fb_cursor with soft_cursor for drivers that do not support hardware cursors is redundant. The soft_cursor function is usable by all drivers because it is just a wrapper around fb_imageblit. And because soft_cursor is an fbcon-specific hook, the file is moved to the console directory. Thus, drivers that do not support hardware cursors can leave the fb_cursor field blank. For drivers that do, they can fill up this field with their own version. The end result is a smaller code size. And if the framebuffer console is not loaded, module/kernel size is also reduced because the soft_cursor module will also not be loaded. 2005-09-13[PATCH] matroxfb adjustmentsJan Beulich
Some adjustments to the matroxfb code, for one part preventing the display to be disabled for longer than necessary, and for the other part to make information about the frame buffer position available so that a kernel debugger might obtain that before the initial mode change. Finally, some return code corrections to fit the generic fb code. 2005-09-09[PATCH] matroxfb: read MGA PInS data on PowerPCIan Romanick
This updates the matroxfb code so that it can find the PInS data embedded in the BIOS on PowerPC cards. The process for finding the data is different on OpenFirmware cards than on x86 cards, and the code for doing so was missing. After patching, building, installing, and booting a kernel, you should grep for "PInS" in /var/log/messages. You should see two messages in the log: PInS data found at offset XXXXX PInS memtype = X On the GXT135p card I get "31168" and "5". The first value is irrelevant, but it's presence lets me know that the PInS data was actually found. On a GXT130p, the second value should be 3. Since I don't have access to that hardware, if someone can verify that, I will submit a follow-on patch that rips out all the memtype parameter stuff. 2005-09-05[PATCH] I2C: Kill i2c_algorithm.id (5/7)Jean Delvare
Merge the algorithm id part (16 upper bits) of the i2c adapters ids into the definition of the adapters ids directly. After that, we don't need to OR both ids together for each i2c_adapter structure. Signed-off-by: Jean Delvare <khali@linux-fr.org> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>

2005-06-21[PATCH] I2C: Kill address ranges in non-sensors i2c chip driversJean Delvare
Some months ago, you killed the address ranges mechanism from all sensors i2c chip drivers (both the module parameters and the in-code address lists). I think it was a very good move, as the ranges can easily be replaced by individual addresses, and this allowed for significant cleanups in the i2c core (let alone the impressive size shrink for all these drivers). Unfortunately you did not do the same for non-sensors i2c chip drivers. These need the address ranges even less, so we could get rid of the ranges here as well for another significant i2c core cleanup. Here comes a patch which does just that. Since the process is exactly the same as what you did for the other drivers set already, I did not split this one in parts. A documentation update is included. The change saves 308 bytes in the i2c core, and an average 1382 bytes for chip drivers which use I2C_CLIENT_INSMOD, 126 bytes for those which do not. This change is required if we want to merge the sensors and non-sensors i2c code (and we want to do this).
