2008-01-31[NET]: Introducing socket mark socket option.Laszlo Attila Toth
A userspace program may wish to set the mark for each packets its send without using the netfilter MARK target. Changing the mark can be used for mark based routing without netfilter or for packet filtering. It requires CAP_NET_ADMIN capability. 2007-11-28m32r: Update sys_rt_sigsuspendHirokazu Takata
Update sys_rt_sigsuspend() of arch/m32r/signal.c. This modification is derived from generic one of kernel/signal.c. Signed-off-by: Hirokazu Takata <takata@linux-m32r.org>
2007-11-28m32r: Ignore warnings for unused syscallsHirokazu Takata
checksyscalls.sh reports warnings for missing syscalls. But, on m32r, some legacy syscalls were removed elaborately. This patch kills warnings for obsolete syscalls, which are no longer used in the m32r kernel. Signed-off-by: Hirokazu Takata <takata@linux-m32r.org>
2007-11-28m32r: Add missing syscallsHirokazu Takata
Add the following 39 syscalls for m32r: sys_add_key, sys_request_key, sys_keyctl, sys_ioprio_set, sys_ioprio_get, sys_inotify_init, sys_inotify_add_watch, sys_inotify_rm_watch, sys_migrate_pages, sys_openat, sys_mkdirat, sys_mknodat, sys_fchownat, sys_futimesat, sys_fstatat64, sys_unlinkat, sys_renameat, sys_linkat, sys_symlinkat, sys_readlinkat, sys_fchmodat, sys_faccessat, sys_pselect6, sys_ppoll, sys_unshare, sys_set_robust_list, sys_get_robust_list, sys_splice, sys_sync_file_range, sys_tee, sys_vmsplice, sys_move_pages, sys_getcpu, sys_epoll_pwait, sys_utimensat, sys_signalfd, sys_timerfd, sys_eventfd, sys_fallocate Signed-off-by: Hirokazu Takata <takata@linux-m32r.org>

2007-10-22Change table chaining layoutJens Axboe
Change the page member of the scatterlist structure to be an unsigned long, and encode more stuff in the lower bits: - Bits 0 and 1 zero: this is a normal sg entry. Next sg entry is located at sg + 1. - Bit 0 set: this is a chain entry, the next real entry is at ->page_link with the two low bits masked off. - Bit 1 set: this is the final entry in the sg entry. sg_next() will return NULL when passed such an entry. It's thus important that sg table users use the proper accessors to get and set the page member. Signed-off-by: Jens Axboe <jens.axboe@oracle.com>

2007-10-17remove strict ansi check from __u64 in asm/types.hOlaf Hering
Remove the __STRICT_ANSI__ check from the __u64/__s64 declaration on 32bit targets. GCC can be made to warn about usage of long long types with ISO C90 (-ansi), but only with -pedantic. You can write this in a way that even then it doesn't cause warnings, namely by: #ifdef __GNUC__ __extension__ typedef __signed__ long long __s64; __extension__ typedef unsigned long long __u64; #endif The __extension__ keyword in front of this switches off any pedantic warnings for this expression. 2007-07-17Add __GFP_MOVABLE for callers to flag allocations from high memory that may ↵Mel Gorman
be migrated It is often known at allocation time whether a page may be migrated or not. This patch adds a flag called __GFP_MOVABLE and a new mask called GFP_HIGH_MOVABLE. Allocations using the __GFP_MOVABLE can be either migrated using the page migration mechanism or reclaimed by syncing with backing storage and discarding. An API function very similar to alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() is added for __GFP_MOVABLE allocations called alloc_zeroed_user_highpage_movable(). The flags used by alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() are not changed because it would change the semantics of an existing API. After this patch is applied there are no in-kernel users of alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() so it probably should be marked deprecated if this patch is merged. Note that this patch includes a minor cleanup to the use of __GFP_ZERO in shmem.c to keep all flag modifications to inode->mapping in the shmem_dir_alloc() helper function. This clean-up suggestion is courtesy of Hugh Dickens. Additional credit goes to Christoph Lameter and Linus Torvalds for shaping the concept. 2007-05-11m32r: fix switch_to macro to push/pop frame pointer if neededHirokazu Takata
This patch fixes a rarely-happened but severe scheduling problem of the recent m32r kernel of 2.6.17-rc3 or later. In the following previous m32r patch, the switch_to macro was modified not to do unnecessary push/pop operations for tuning. > [PATCH] m32r: update switch_to macro for tuning > 4127272c38619c56f0c1aa01d01c7bd757db70a1 In this modification, only 'lr' and 'sp' registers are push/pop'ed, assuming that the m32r kernel is always compiled with -fomit-frame-pointer option. However, in 2.6 kernel, kernel/sched.c is irregularly compiled with -fno-omit-frame-pointer if CONFIG_SCHED_NO_NO_OMIT_FRAME_POINTER is not defined. -- kernel/Makefile -- : ifneq ($(CONFIG_SCHED_NO_NO_OMIT_FRAME_POINTER),y) # According to Alan Modra <alan@linuxcare.com.au>, the -fno-omit-frame-pointer is # needed for x86 only. Why this used to be enabled for all architectures is beyond # me. I suspect most platforms don't need this, but until we know that for sure # I turn this off for IA-64 only. Andreas Schwab says it's also needed on m68k # to get a correct value for the wait-channel (WCHAN in ps). --davidm CFLAGS_sched.o := $(PROFILING) -fno-omit-frame-pointer endif : --- Therefore, for the recent m32r kernel, we have to push/pop 'fp' (frame pointer) if CONFIG_FRAME_POINTER is defined or CONFIG_SCHED_NO_NO_OMIT_FRAME_POINTER is not defined. 2007-05-09Remove hardcoding of hard_smp_processor_id on UP systemsFernando Luis Vazquez Cao
With the advent of kdump, the assumption that the boot CPU when booting an UP kernel is always the CPU with a particular hardware ID (often 0) (usually referred to as BSP on some architectures) is not valid anymore. The reason being that the dump capture kernel boots on the crashed CPU (the CPU that invoked crash_kexec), which may be or may not be that particular CPU. Move definition of hard_smp_processor_id for the UP case to architecture-specific code ("asm/smp.h") where it belongs, so that each architecture can provide its own implementation. dependency atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular dependency. I agree (with Andi Kleen) this typeof is not needed and more error prone. All the original atomic.h code that uses cmpxchg (which includes the atomic_add_unless) uses defines instead of inline functions, probably to circumvent a circular dependency between system.h and atomic.h on powerpc (which my patch addresses). Therefore, it makes sense to use inline functions that will provide type checking. atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular dependency. Digging into the FRV architecture shows me that it is also affected by such a circular dependency. Here is the diff applying this against the rest of my atomic.h patches. It applies over the atomic.h standardization patches. 2007-05-08Clean up mostly unused IOSPACE macrosDavid Gibson
Most architectures defined three macros, MK_IOSPACE_PFN(), GET_IOSPACE() and GET_PFN() in pgtable.h. However, the only callers of any of these macros are in Sparc specific code, either in arch/sparc, arch/sparc64 or drivers/sbus. This patch removes the redundant macros from all architectures except sparc and sparc64. 2007-05-08move die notifier handling to common codeChristoph Hellwig
This patch moves the die notifier handling to common code. Previous various architectures had exactly the same code for it. Note that the new code is compiled unconditionally, this should be understood as an appel to the other architecture maintainer to implement support for it aswell (aka sprinkling a notify_die or two in the proper place) arm had a notifiy_die that did something totally different, I renamed it to arm_notify_die as part of the patch and made it static to the file it's declared and used at. avr32 used to pass slightly less information through this interface and I brought it into line with the other architectures. 2007-05-02[PATCH] x86: PARAVIRT: add hooks to intercept mm creation and destructionJeremy Fitzhardinge
Add hooks to allow a paravirt implementation to track the lifetime of an mm. Paravirtualization requires three hooks, but only two are needed in common code. They are: arch_dup_mmap, which is called when a new mmap is created at fork arch_exit_mmap, which is called when the last process reference to an mm is dropped, which typically happens on exit and exec. The third hook is activate_mm, which is called from the arch-specific activate_mm() macro/function, and so doesn't need stub versions for other architectures. It's called when an mm is first used. 2007-04-25[NET]: Adding SO_TIMESTAMPNS / SCM_TIMESTAMPNS supportEric Dumazet
Now that network timestamps use ktime_t infrastructure, we can add a new SOL_SOCKET sockopt SO_TIMESTAMPNS. This command is similar to SO_TIMESTAMP, but permits transmission of a 'timespec struct' instead of a 'timeval struct' control message. (nanosecond resolution instead of microsecond) Control message is labelled SCM_TIMESTAMPNS instead of SCM_TIMESTAMP A socket cannot mix SO_TIMESTAMP and SO_TIMESTAMPNS : the two modes are mutually exclusive. sock_recv_timestamp() became too big to be fully inlined so I added a __sock_recv_timestamp() helper function. 2007-04-25[NET]: Introduce SIOCGSTAMPNS ioctl to get timestamps with nanosec resolutionEric Dumazet

2007-02-11[PATCH] consolidate line discipline number definitionsTilman Schmidt
The line discipline numbers N_* are currently defined for each architecture individually, but (except for a seeming mistake) identically, in asm/termios.h. There is no obvious reason why these numbers should be architecture specific, nor any apparent relationship with the termios structure. The total number of these, NR_LDISCS, is defined in linux/tty.h anyway. So I propose the following patch which moves the definitions of the individual line disciplines to linux/tty.h too. Three of these numbers (N_MASC, N_PROFIBUS_FDL, and N_SMSBLOCK) are unused in the current kernel, but the patch still keeps the complete set in case there are plans to use them yet.
