2007-08-27[PARISC] Add dummy isa_(bus|virt)_to_(virt|bus) inlinesKyle McMartin
Less painful than fixing up the Kconfig for a pile of drivers to only build on X86 && ARM && MIPS... Just make them BUG(), as defining them to be 1:1 with physical memory will likely HPMC the box anyways. Signed-off-by: Kyle McMartin <kyle@parisc-linux.org>

2007-07-19arch: personality independent stack topPeter Zijlstra
New arch macro STACK_TOP_MAX it gives the larges valid stack address for the architecture in question. It differs from STACK_TOP in that it will not distinguish between personalities but will always return the largest possible address. This is used to create the initial stack on execve, which we will move down to the proper location once the binfmt code has figured out where that is. 2007-07-16Introduce compat_u64 and compat_s64 typesArnd Bergmann
One common problem with 32 bit system call and ioctl emulation is the different alignment rules between i386 and 64 bit machines. A number of drivers work around this by marking the compat structures as 'attribute((packed))', which is not the right solution because it breaks all the non-x86 architectures that want to use the same compat code. Hopefully, this patch improves the situation, it introduces two new types, compat_u64 and compat_s64. These are defined on all architectures to have the same size and alignment as the 32 bit version of u64 and s64. Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> Acked-by: David S. 2007-07-16Introduce O_CLOEXECUlrich Drepper
The problem is as follows: in multi-threaded code (or more correctly: all code using clone() with CLONE_FILES) we have a race when exec'ing. thread #1 thread #2 fd=open() fork + exec fcntl(fd,F_SETFD,FD_CLOEXEC) In some applications this can happen frequently. Take a web browser. One thread opens a file and another thread starts, say, an external PDF viewer. The result can even be a security issue if that open file descriptor refers to a sensitive file and the external program can somehow be tricked into using that descriptor. Just adding O_CLOEXEC support to open() doesn't solve the whole set of problems. There are other ways to create file descriptors (socket, epoll_create, Unix domain socket transfer, etc). These can and should be addressed separately though. open() is such an easy case that it makes not much sense putting the fix off. The test program: #include <errno.h> #include <fcntl.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <unistd.h> #ifndef O_CLOEXEC # define O_CLOEXEC 02000000 #endif int main (int argc, char *argv[]) { int fd; if (argc > 1) { fd = atol (argv[1]); printf ("child: fd = %d\n", fd); if (fcntl (fd, F_GETFD) == 0 || errno != EBADF) { puts ("file descriptor valid in child"); return 1; } return 0; } fd = open ("/proc/self/exe", O_RDONLY | O_CLOEXEC); printf ("in parent: new fd = %d\n", fd); char buf[20]; snprintf (buf, sizeof (buf), "%d", fd); execl ("/proc/self/exe", argv[0], buf, NULL); puts ("execl failed"); return 1; } [kyle@parisc-linux.org: parisc fix] Signed-off-by: Ulrich Drepper <drepper@redhat.com> Acked-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu> Cc: Davide Libenzi <davidel@xmailserver.org> Cc: Michael Kerrisk <mtk-manpages@gmx.net> Cc: Chris Zankel <chris@zankel.net> Signed-off-by: Kyle McMartin <kyle@parisc-linux.org> Acked-by: David S. 2007-07-11PCI: Use a weak symbol for the empty version of pcibios_add_platform_entries()Michael Ellerman
I'm not sure if this is going to fly, weak symbols work on the compilers I'm using, but whether they work for all of the affected architectures I can't say. I've cc'ed as many arch maintainers/lists as I could find. 2007-05-21Detach sched.h from mm.hAlexey Dobriyan
First thing mm.h does is including sched.h solely for can_do_mlock() inline function which has "current" dereference inside. By dealing with can_do_mlock() mm.h can be detached from sched.h which is good. See below, why. This patch a) removes unconditional inclusion of sched.h from mm.h b) makes can_do_mlock() normal function in mm/mlock.c c) exports can_do_mlock() to not break compilation d) adds sched.h inclusions back to files that were getting it indirectly. e) adds less bloated headers to some files (asm/signal.h, jiffies.h) that were getting them indirectly Net result is: a) mm.h users would get less code to open, read, preprocess, parse, ... if they don't need sched.h b) sched.h stops being dependency for significant number of files: on x86_64 allmodconfig touching sched.h results in recompile of 4083 files, after patch it's only 3744 (-8.3%). 2007-05-08atomic.h: atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular ↵Mathieu Desnoyers
dependency atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular dependency. I agree (with Andi Kleen) this typeof is not needed and more error prone. All the original atomic.h code that uses cmpxchg (which includes the atomic_add_unless) uses defines instead of inline functions, probably to circumvent a circular dependency between system.h and atomic.h on powerpc (which my patch addresses). Therefore, it makes sense to use inline functions that will provide type checking. atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular dependency. Digging into the FRV architecture shows me that it is also affected by such a circular dependency. Here is the diff applying this against the rest of my atomic.h patches. It applies over the atomic.h standardization patches. 2007-05-08Clean up mostly unused IOSPACE macrosDavid Gibson
Most architectures defined three macros, MK_IOSPACE_PFN(), GET_IOSPACE() and GET_PFN() in pgtable.h. 2007-05-08move die notifier handling to common codeChristoph Hellwig
This patch moves the die notifier handling to common code. Previous various architectures had exactly the same code for it. Note that the new code is compiled unconditionally, this should be understood as an appel to the other architecture maintainer to implement support for it aswell (aka sprinkling a notify_die or two in the proper place) arm had a notifiy_die that did something totally different, I renamed it to arm_notify_die as part of the patch and made it static to the file it's declared and used at. avr32 used to pass slightly less information through this interface and I brought it into line with the other architectures. 2007-05-02[PATCH] x86: PARAVIRT: add hooks to intercept mm creation and destructionJeremy Fitzhardinge
Add hooks to allow a paravirt implementation to track the lifetime of an mm. Paravirtualization requires three hooks, but only two are needed in common code. They are: arch_dup_mmap, which is called when a new mmap is created at fork arch_exit_mmap, which is called when the last process reference to an mm is dropped, which typically happens on exit and exec. The third hook is activate_mm, which is called from the arch-specific activate_mm() macro/function, and so doesn't need stub versions for other architectures. It's called when an mm is first used. 2007-04-25[NET]: Adding SO_TIMESTAMPNS / SCM_TIMESTAMPNS supportEric Dumazet
Now that network timestamps use ktime_t infrastructure, we can add a new SOL_SOCKET sockopt SO_TIMESTAMPNS. This command is similar to SO_TIMESTAMP, but permits transmission of a 'timespec struct' instead of a 'timeval struct' control message. (nanosecond resolution instead of microsecond) Control message is labelled SCM_TIMESTAMPNS instead of SCM_TIMESTAMP A socket cannot mix SO_TIMESTAMP and SO_TIMESTAMPNS : the two modes are mutually exclusive. sock_recv_timestamp() became too big to be fully inlined so I added a __sock_recv_timestamp() helper function.
