2008-05-13uml: use PAGE_SIZE in linker scriptsCyrill Gorcunov
This patch includes page.h header into linker scripts that allow us to use PAGE_SIZE macro instead of numeric constant. To be able to include page.h into linker scripts page.h is needed for some modification - i.e. we need to use __ASSEMBLY__ and _AC macro [jdike@linux.intel.com - fixed conflict with as-layout.h] Signed-off-by: Cyrill Gorcunov <gorcunov@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Jeff Dike <jdike@linux.intel.com> Cc: WANG Cong <xiyou.wangcong@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2008-02-08CONFIG_HIGHPTE vs. sub-page page tables.Martin Schwidefsky
Background: I've implemented 1K/2K page tables for s390. These sub-page page tables are required to properly support the s390 virtualization instruction with KVM. The SIE instruction requires that the page tables have 256 page table entries (pte) followed by 256 page status table entries (pgste). The pgstes are only required if the process is using the SIE instruction. The pgstes are updated by the hardware and by the hypervisor for a number of reasons, one of them is dirty and reference bit tracking. To avoid wasting memory the standard pte table allocation should return 1K/2K (31/64 bit) and 2K/4K if the process is using SIE. Problem: Page size on s390 is 4K, page table size is 1K or 2K. That means the s390 version for pte_alloc_one cannot return a pointer to a struct page. Trouble is that with the CONFIG_HIGHPTE feature on x86 pte_alloc_one cannot return a pointer to a pte either, since that would require more than 32 bit for the return value of pte_alloc_one (and the pte * would not be accessible since its not kmapped). Solution: The only solution I found to this dilemma is a new typedef: a pgtable_t. For s390 pgtable_t will be a (pte *) - to be introduced with a later patch. For everybody else it will be a (struct page *). The additional problem with the initialization of the ptl lock and the NR_PAGETABLE accounting is solved with a constructor pgtable_page_ctor and a destructor pgtable_page_dtor. The page table allocation and free functions need to call these two whenever a page table page is allocated or freed. pmd_populate will get a pgtable_t instead of a struct page pointer. To get the pgtable_t back from a pmd entry that has been installed with pmd_populate a new function pmd_pgtable is added. It replaces the pmd_page call in free_pte_range and apply_to_pte_range. 2008-02-05uml: fix page table data sizesJeff Dike
Get the sizes of various pieces of data right when using three-level page tables. pgd and pmd entries remain at 32 bits in a 32-bit compilation because page tables will remain in low memory. So, PGDIR_SHIFT, the PTRS_PER_* values, set_pud, set_pmd are conditional on 64BIT. More use of phys_t is made when there are physical memory addresses floating around. ObCheckpatchViolationJustification - the new typedef is an alternate definition of pmd_t, which I can't really live without. 2007-10-16uml: ptrace floating point fixesJeff Dike
Handle floating point state better in ptrace. The code now correctly distinguishes between PTRACE_[GS]ETFPREGS and PTRACE_[GS]ETFPXREGS. The FPX requests get handed off to arch-specific code because that's not generic. get_fpregs, set_fpregs, set_fpregs, and set_fpxregs needed real implementations. Something here exposed a missing include in asm/page.h, which needed linux/types.h in order to get gfp_t, so that's fixed here. 2007-05-07uml: more page fault path trimmingJeff Dike
More trimming of the page fault path. Permissions are passed around in a single int rather than one bit per int. The permission values are copied from libc so that they can be passed to mmap and mprotect without any further conversion. The register sets used by do_syscall_stub and copy_context_skas0 are initialized once, at boot time, rather than once per call. wait_stub_done checks whether it is getting the signals it expects by comparing the wait status to a mask containing bits for the signals of interest rather than comparing individually to the signal numbers. It also has one check for a wait failure instead of two. The caller is expected to do the initial continue of the stub. This gets rid of an argument and some logic. The fname argument is gone, as that can be had from a stack trace. user_signal() is collapsed into userspace() as it is basically one or two lines of code afterwards. The physical memory remapping stuff is gone, as it is unused. flush_tlb_page is inlined. 2005-09-10[PATCH] uml: inline mk_pte and various friendsPaolo 'Blaisorblade' Giarrusso
Turns out that, for UML, a *lot* of VM-related trivial functions are not inlined but rather normal functions. In other sections of UML code, this is justified by having files which interact with the host and cannot therefore include kernel headers, but in this case there's no such justification. I've had to turn many of them to macros because of missing declarations. While doing this, I've decided to reuse some already existing macros. 2005-09-05[PATCH] mm: consolidate get_orderStephen Rothwell
Someone mentioned that almost all the architectures used basically the same implementation of get_order. This patch consolidates them into asm-generic/page.h and includes that in the appropriate places. The exceptions are ia64 and ppc which have their own (presumably optimised) versions. 2005-08-15um: fix __pa/__va macro expansion problemLinus Torvalds
Proper parentheses around arguments needed, especially as the macros use a high-precedence cast operator on the argument.

2005-05-05[PATCH] uml: obvious compile fixes for x86-64 Subarch and x86 regression fixesPaolo 'Blaisorblade' Giarrusso
This patch does some totally trivial compilation fixes. It also restores the debugregs manipulation, which was commented out simply because it doesn't compile on x86_64 (we haven't yet implemented there debugregs handling). 2005-05-01[PATCH] uml: support AES i586 crypto driverPaolo 'Blaisorblade' Giarrusso
We want to make possible, for the user, to enable the i586 AES implementation. This requires a restructure. - Add a CONFIG_UML_X86 to notify that we are building a UML for i386. - Rename CONFIG_64_BIT to CONFIG_64BIT as is used for all other archs - Tell crypto/Kconfig that UML_X86 is as good as X86 - Tell it that it must exclude not X86_64 but 64BIT, which will give the same results. - Tell kbuild to descend down into arch/i386/crypto/ to build what's needed. 2005-04-16Linux-2.6.12-rc2Linus Torvalds
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
