Remove unnecessary kmalloc of temporary space to hold the md5 result; it's small enough to just put on the stack. This code may be called to process rpc's necessary to perform writes, so there's a potential deadlock whenever we kmalloc() here. After this a couple kmalloc()'s still remain, to be removed soon. Add fields to the rpc_procinfo struct that allow the display of a human-readable name for each procedure in the rpc_iostats output. Also fix it so that the NFSv4 stats are broken up correctly by sub-procedure number. NFSv4 uses only two real RPC procedures: NULL, and COMPOUND. When we look up a new cred in the auth_gss downcall so that we can stuff the credcache, we do not want that lookup to queue up an upcall in order to initialise it. To do an upcall here not only redundant, but since we are already holding the inode->i_mutex, it will trigger a lock recursion. We require the server's gssd to create a completed context before asking the kernel to send a final context init reply. However, gssd could be buggy, or under some bizarre circumstances we might purge the context from our cache before we get the chance to use it here. 2006-01-08[PATCH] shrink dentry structEric Dumazet
Some long time ago, dentry struct was carefully tuned so that on 32 bits UP, sizeof(struct dentry) was exactly 128, ie a power of 2, and a multiple of memory cache lines. Then RCU was added and dentry struct enlarged by two pointers, with nice results for SMP, but not so good on UP, because breaking the above tuning (128 + 8 = 136 bytes) This patch reverts this unwanted side effect, by using an union (d_u), where d_rcu and d_child are placed so that these two fields can share their memory needs. At the time d_free() is called (and d_rcu is really used), d_child is known to be empty and not touched by the dentry freeing. Lockless lookups only access d_name, d_parent, d_lock, d_op, d_flags (so the previous content of d_child is not needed if said dentry was unhashed but still accessed by a CPU because of RCU constraints) As dentry cache easily contains millions of entries, a size reduction is worth the extra complexity of the ugly C union. 2006-01-06SUNRPC: switchable buffer allocationChuck Lever
Add RPC client transport switch support for replacing buffer management on a per-transport basis. In the current IPv4 socket transport implementation, RPC buffers are allocated as needed for each RPC message that is sent. Some transport implementations may choose to use pre-allocated buffers for encoding, sending, receiving, and unmarshalling RPC messages, however. For transports capable of direct data placement, the buffers can be carved out of a pre-registered area of memory rather than from a slab cache. Test-plan: Millions of fsx operations. Performance characterization with "sio" and "iozone". Use oprofile and other tools to look for significant regression in CPU utilization.
